rk'nni' Jind lidat wavo, which struck
Gunyinns, jruxicA, October !, mid
liihtcil fivo diiJC The lowns of Kin
polo, Ortir. nnd San Joso do Gun.
mns wore destroyed. Conununiea
tion is severed.
Tho flood destroyed lowns on tin
eastern shore of the tlulf of Cnli
l'oruiii, Unnymas, Alhtnlm, Topol
banipa vcr also terribly damnjd
by tlio same wuo, which was tho re
sult of an earthquake.
Tho hurrieane sueoevdinj the wave
lasted fivo days, outline off com
munication so that no details of the
frightful diVnster arrived until word
was received from the memor vt
Ilerniosillo, in Sonora, today, asking
for provisions, tents and clothing.
The governor' dispatch states
that from 300 to 500 perished in tho
tidal wavo and hurricane. It is im
possible to I'htlnmlo the damage.
The cnrtlupiakn which caused the
death dealing wavo occurred in the
middle of the night. A Imgo wall of
water, twenty feet high, swept from
tho Gtdf of California upon the
doomed towns. Ships, houses and
other buildings were swept far in
land in the terrific swirl, and many
of them were deposited miles inland
on the sand dunes.
In the wild confusion of the sea's
inrush, scores ot men mm women
were drowned in their beds, while
others were crushed under the fal
len wreckage. Men fought despcr
ntcjy fpr pieces of tho wrecked
buildings to enable them to keep
their beads above the .swirling wat
ers. Many of those who escaped
drowning in the first sweep of the
wave were washed into the gulf as it
receded nnd devoured by sharks
which infested tho waters.
The harbors of everyone of the
ruined towns wns swept clean of
shipping.
Seventeen vessels in tho harbor of
Guaymns alone were destroyed bv
tho flood, and their wrecked hulks
todny are piled along the shore and
on the snutl dunes of the interior.
Heart rendering tales of the dis
aster are told by the survivors,
scores ujhui scores of whom, the
governor telegraphs from llcnnosil-
lo, sustained broken arms and legs
when their homes went down like
cardboard before tho rush of tie
water. Insufficient medical assis
tance, lack of food and shelter are
creating dire distress among the sur
vivors of tho district.
Famine is already beginning 10
show its head and unless supplies
anil. medical aid arc at once received
tho list of dead, already many hun
dreds Jong, will bo increased until
nearly 1000 will have been sacrificed
in the catastrophe.
