Timber wolves are proving ex
tremely destructive this summer in
the Cascade mountains nud mnny
deer, cattle nud elk are falling pny
to them, according to cattlemen and
forest rangers who have returned
from the timber belt.
It is expected that the animals will
prove even more destructive to game
during the winter, as practically all
the cattle will have been brought
to the lowlands.

PORTLAND. Or., Aug. 23. Asked
concerning the rumor that the in
dictment against Louis J. Wilde,
the San Diego banker who is ac
cused of cmbczxlcmcut had been
found defective and that the grand
jury now in session had been re
quested to bring in a new one, Dis
trict Attorney Cameron today dc
lincd to make a tie finite statement.
"It might be mi, and it might not. I
1 cannot discuss grand jury matters,'
said Cameron.
The delay in Wilde's arraign
meut and unwillingness of the au
thorities to talk is taken to indicate'
that Wilde probably will not be
brought to trial on the present in
dictment which charges that he and
W. Cooper Morris, as officers of
the defunct Oregon Trust & Saving,
bank, embezzled funds jointly.
Wilde, strictly speaking was not
an officer of the bank, and it is said
this fact might constitute a loophole
for him to escape conviction were he
guilty as charged.
