JOLTS AND JINGLES
By Ad Brown
I
Mim will brat: nbont mighty little.
Ono fellow did it because bis uncle
bad n street named after him.
Tho aviator is the true idcnlist;
at least bis view point is the highest.
The trouble with many promisiup
young men is that they are merely
promising young men.
STOll of relief goes up H! Nelson has left town.
The fsiot that iModford is si ill linuorinir in (he vill
age era alone accounts for the attention showered upon
this illiterate wearer of diamonds and professional bruiser
of men, now eligible for the "has been" club.
Of all the heroes ever conjured out of the gutter, Hat
Nelson is least to be admired. With the social self asser
tiveness that onR dense ignorance produces, he combine
a penuriousuoss rarely seen outside a pawn shop, both
delightful traits.
Mayor Canon acted wisely in forbidding future prize
fights in Modford. It is a mistaken idea to think that
pugilism is even a commercial benefit to the community.
U is not, any more than gambling is. King contests create
no wealth, bring in no wealth, but take wealth out Nelson
leaves- with over $800 of Modford money. And what has
Modford in return1? Nothing, save an unpleasant recollec
tion, a lowered moral tone and a loss of self respect.
There was a time when humanity gloried in the spec
tacle of men, women and children being torn to bloody
shreds by wild beasts, when the shrieks of victims cruci
fied and burned alive were music to the oars of spectators?
and when countless devises giving forth the groans of the
tortured gave joy to the multitude. Those times fled
long since with the mental development of the race. Pug
ilism, alone remains to signal the survival of tho old bar
baric bruitc instinct, and it is dying. It is now in the class
whose intellectual development fits it the negro. Tts evil
influence is recognized by the ban placed upon it in all
civilized countries.
xVll professional sport becomes sooner or later crooked.
The introduction of the mercenary motive demoralizes it.
And of all the crooked, twisted sport, pugilism is the crook
eldest. There may be honest ring battles but they are few
and far between.
So pugilism is not onlv a survival of barbarism but a re
vival of crookedness. Yet the nation that rewards a Bat
Nelson with diamonds permits an Edgar Allen Poo to die
of starvation!.

If war wero n real necessity w6
would have a war trust.
Sometimes, in the depths of the
forest when nature is at its best' I
have reached the conclusion that the
world could get along without base
ball. Now wo read of a woman who had
her two sons arrested because they
slept when they should have been
meeting her at the train. That's the
correct attitude; when n man sleeps
have him pinched.
It may be that Arizona will have
tho chanco to choose statehood or

doesn't flinch.

So far the Wiley case has shown

COERCING GRANTS PASS.
THAT the Southern Pacific is to punish Grants Pass for
having demanded that streets across the right-of-way
be opened, is the astonishing admission of Station Agent T.
M. Isham of Grants Pass, as reported in the Rogue River
Courier.
A survey is said to have been started from Merlin to
tho coast with the declared intention of taking away the
terminal from Grants Pass. Mr. Isham is quoted as fol
lows: "A few days after the city's suit was filed calling con
demnation proceedings to open more streets, Manager
O'Brien stopped off here a few minutes en route to San
Francisco and said to me, 'What's the matter? "Wljat's the
matter?' I replied that T didn't know except that the city
council seemed determined to cut into our property. Mr.
O'Brien replied with heat that he wouldn't stand for it,
that he would take the terminal away from here and would
spend no more mono' in Grants Pass."
"A route from Merlin into Illinois valley will eliminate
the big hill which would be on a route from Grants Pass,
and as the company will not tolerate this suit of the city the
company is not in a hurry to put any more money into
Grants Pass."
Asked by The Courier if he objected to being quoted in
the matter LV. Isham said: "Not at all; print it." lie con
tinued: "A line from Merlin will also give the Southern Pacific
more terminal ground, something the company will not
have here with streets cutting through its yards.
"Regarding moving the present terminal to Glendale
instead of at Grants Pass, I can say that it will take $5,000
monthly from Grants Pass, and this jumping on the South
era Pacific and other people who have invested capital will
bear bitter fruit."
This will be read with astonishment. That a railroad
company should exhibit such petty spite against one of
the communities along it, is astonishing. That such a co
ercion should be attempted is almost unbelievable.
Having been whacked on both cheeks, Grants Pass
will probably get busy and find a third for the Southern
Pacific to slap.
