city council W. D. Welsh, who resides
on Riverside avenue, through his at
torney filed a demand with the coun
cil for an adjustment or settlement
for injuries sustained recently when
he fell into an open hole on Riverside.

& Eastern railroad. So serious has
tho troublo become that General Man
ager Gerlg is planning to hnvo tho
lino patroled in an effort to appre
hend the parties who uso such poor
judgment in the choico of targets.
As the telephone line Is used by
tho railroad for tho dispatch of trains,
any interference with tho line places
many travelers In jeopardy. A num
ber of wor ktralns aro on tno line, as
well as tho passengers, nnd upon the
proper dispatching of tho trains Is
based safety.
It Is a serious offenco In tho eyes
of tho law to Interfere with telegraph
and telephone lines, especially those
used for such a purpose, and If the
offenders aro caught It will go hard
with them.
Mr. Gerlg stated today that he
would pay a substantial reward for
tho apprehension of tho guilty parties
and their conviction.

poses. An ordinance declaring the cost of
improvement by paving on West Seo
onw street was passed.

tion to lay ti six-inch sewer main on
Newtown from Sixth to Eighth streets
was passed.
Plats of Howard's and Winchester
additions to tho city of Mcdford
were accepted.
An ordinance vacating tho alley in
block 1, Central subdivision, was
passed.
Tho sidewalks- on Clark street were
ordered brought to grade. ,
A number of resolutions ordering
paving on various streets were
passed.

A petition was filed with the city
council Tuesdny evening asking that
n salary bo paid to Eugene Annum,
who has been chief of the fire de
partment for a number of years. It
was stated in the petition that Mr.
Amann's duties ns chief of the de
partment have increased to a great
extent owing to the growth of the city
and that nearly his entire time is
now devoted to tho work. So far he
has worked 'without salary other than
tho $1 paid members of the fire de
partment for responding to alarms.
Tho multer was referred to the fi
nance committee for a report.
