tour of inspection of the new ronds

highway, built by popular subscrip
tion, nnd of the new million dollar
power plant he is constructing at
Prospect.
Leaving Mcdford Saturday in
seven automobiles, the party took
the Derby road from Eagle Point. At
Frank Neil's home at Derby, Mrs.
Neil served delightful sherbet. From
here tho newly completed road to the
Hoguo was traversed, tho new steel
bridge at the mouth of Big Butte be
ing crossed. Thence, over tho newly
completed section of the Crater lake
highway built by public subscription,
the autos wound their way along the
picturesque Rogue to Skookum gorge,
where refreshments were served and
oratory indulged in by Judge Colvig
and others. The evening was spent
at Prospect,
Sunday morning the party inspect
ed Graham's ginseng garden, the
largest in the state, three miles north
of Prospect, then visited the intake
for the new poper plant, and the
permanent plant under construction.
Dinner was served at Enyart's
ranch and the party reached Mcd
ford late in the afternoon.
A most enjoyable time was had by
nil und a vote of thanks given Colonel
Ray for his hospitality. In the party
were County Judge Neil, Commis
sioners Davis and Owens, Mayor V.
II. Canon, County Assessor Grieves,
Howard Dudley, Edgar Hnfcr, Pro

Dr. R. U. Clark, nn instructor in
the history department of tho Uni-
vetty of Oregon, addressed the con
gregation of tho Presbyterian church,
Suudny morning on religious mstruu
tion in the schools of France was
his subject.
Dr. Clark traced the educational
history of France from tho time
when the Catholic church, united with
state, had had entire supervision ot
the schools, to the present time. He
showed thnt although the Roman
Catholic prayers and catechism had
not been included in the curiculi of
the schools since 18S2, that moral
nnd non-sectarian religious law was
still taught inu the schools. He ex
pressed the belief thnt the schools
primary, secondary, and collegiate
should co-opcratc with the home nnd
churches in the character building of
the youth and not spend nil their
energies on intellectuality.
COURT?
A largo number of local business
men arc preparing to visit Grants
Pass. Tuesday to participate in the
mining congress which has been ar
ranged in that city. A number of the
men, prominent in mining circles of
this city, are to deliver addresses
before the gathering.
It is believed that tho congress
will lend n great impetus to the in
dustry throughout this section.

for California Rurtlctt pears accord
ing to tho daily advices received by
thu Producers' Fruit company of
this city. A car bus just been sold
nt New York, which was shipped from
Sacramento averaging $3.25 a bos.
As tho California crop of pears
will be practically all sold before the
local crop is forwarded it is believed
that this year exceptionally high
prices will be received. The harvest
ing of the local crop will be under
way about August 10. Tho present
hot spell is doing much good.
