OLD WATER PLANT

htc Old Well Will Probably Bo
Filled In.
Superintendent Trnium of the rity
water works, 1ms men tit work oer-
linnlinf, tenrinj down im building
new tlio old pumping plant station on
South ltivcrsidc nvctinc.
The city owns several lots there
and for bovcrnl years the grounds
have been n catch-all for the city
water system. This is all now being
changed. Carpenters arc removing
tlio surplus buildings recovering
those needful nnd to be retained, the
old motors, pumps, engines nnd boil
ers nrc being dismantled aud plncotl
in shnpo to ba offered for sale. The
grounds are being leveled off for
convenience in handling new material
ni)d the plnee generally is beginning
to tako on an appearance in keep
ing with the slogau, "Medford, the
City Beautiful."
But while nil these improvements
nro going on tlio old well, fully AO
feet deep and 'JO or more feet across
nnd filled nearly to overflowing with
Bear creek water, is still in evidence
A hole in tho ground to tho memory
of Mcdford's outgrown water system.
As there cannot bo any possible
chance for this well to ever again be
of use to the city it will bo filled up.
Thoro arc sure enough germs lurking
around that old hole in the ground
well bcinc of the community.

Now that the MoNamnm imo is ac
tually set for trial, the attorneys f-ir
tho defense of the accused union men
today settled down to earnest woik
in preparation for the log;! batt'c
They miv that to get the tus-- ready
for October 10, will require the hard
est and most pirsisle.nt endeavor.
Not only will the f000 pages of tho
transcript of evidence have to be
gone through and classified, but
trips will have to be made all over
the country, to Chicago, to Indiana,
to Wisconsin, to San FrnuviKCo and
lo many other points where differ
ent phases of the case lead and inan
witnesses summoned.
It is unlikely that there will be fur
ther legal steps taken before thft ac
tual commencement of the trial.
The first thins to absorb the at
tention of the attorneys for tho de
fense will' be the selection of jury
men. A venire will be diauu prior
to October 10 and it is anticipated
that the selection of the jury will
take fully a month. It required that
length of time in the Haywood trial
and Attorney Darrow states thut the
MoNnmnrn. case is probably hotter
known among the people than the fa
mous Idaho case.
AMERICANS ARE

Statistics Show Americans Only
Drink 16.5 Gallons of Beer Apiece
Fifth In Line With Use of Spir
itsFrench Lead All With Wine.
LONDON, July 13. The English
revenue department has been invet
tigating the capacity for drink js
b'esscd by the people of the various
countries from which it has been nblc
to get statistics and it finds a num
ber of quite interesting things.
Germany, for instnnce, is not the
greatest beer-drinking country in the
world, as might have been expected.
Belgium holds the record, with 4I
gallons per enpita per annum, to
Germany's 22 gullons. Bavaria,
however, taken separately from the
rest of Germany, beats even Belgium,
with 50.0 gallons. As a whole, Ger
many is not even second on the Hot.
Englishmen drink 2(5.2 gallons apiece.
The United States record is only 16.5
gallons, or less than cither Belgium,
Englnnd, Germany or Denmark.
As drinkers of spirits, Americans,
rank after Denmark, Germany, Hol
land, Austria nnd France, being tied
with Sweden nt 1.14 gallons apiece.
As wine drinkers the French lead the
world, with 34.5, gallons.

H0W WOMEN CAN I
HAVE BEAUTIFUL HAIR I
(From Stylo aud Fashion Magazine)
"All women should bnvu beautiful
huir, and nearly every woman nould
Imyp an abundance of rich, glossy
tresses if they would stop washing
the life out of it. A soft, pliant scalp
means luxuriant hair, aud to have it
it is necessary for tho scalp to con
tain the right amount of oil to prop
erly nourish the hair follicles.
"Dry shampooing invigorates (he
M-alp and huir roots, keeps out dan
druff and excess oil, and promote
growth of fine, glossy and fluffy
huir.
"An excellent dry shampoo powder
can be made at homo by mixing four
ounces of orris root with four ounces
of thcrox. A tablespoonful sprinkled
on the head, then brushed out care
fully leaves tho scalp cool and re
freshed and the hair fresh, clean,
fluffy hud beautifully lustrous,"
