Next Monday Vast Meeting Before

The Orontor Medford club will hold
It alnHt meeting before the unuiiul

In the club room. Mrs, H. C, Kcnt

Ih to bo hoped that alio can bo per
suaded to again occupy the chair. The
club hits made unite a great nninr
Improvements this past year, nnd
hope to be ablo to accompllKh in ore
tho coming year,
In tho civic Improvement of a city
the women can do a groat deal If
backed by the men, and there Ih no
end to thu municipal reforms thcy
can help to accomplish. In all the
largo cities this Is n recognized fact,
and It Is to bo hoped tbnt this feeling
will develop here, for much greater
results can be nccoinpllHhed when all
work together. The women of the
valloy wnnt to feel that they have u
hand In tho development of tho town
as well us the men, and stand ready
to Join In with them In any work
they aro ablo to do.
Through the effort of the club the
expectoration ordinance Is being en
forced, and the sidewalks and hall;
nre In much better condition. An ef
fort was mado to have trees planted
uniformly on all graded streets last
yearf nnd again this your, but as the
women could not plant them them
selves and no one could bo gotten
to overseo the work. It was not done
Twenty-flvo benches have been or
dered for the park, and an appeal
lias been mado to the different or
ganizatlons in town to help so that
25 mora may be purchased. The
seats cost $15 a piece. The new pari
has no seats at, nil. Tho ncclotis for
a mtiBoum has been started, Dr. Por
ter giving 500 hlrda, If the clul;
would mount them, and 100 aro now
being mounted, 'the rest to be done
as tho monoy can be raised. 'The
collection will bo put In the new libra
ry, when It is finished.
All tho walks' la tho parka have
been regraveletl, IrCes planted nlonr
tho right of way of the Southern Pn
clflc Theso nre a few of the things
the club has done this year. But !
takes money to dii most or the work
and this can only be raised by per
sounl and individual effort of the
club. The opera given by the club was
not a success financially as onlj
a smalt amount over expenses war
taken In. Another cntertalnniont wit1

The special feature of tho entertain-

In order that tho affair may bo i
success the women aro selling the
tickets themselves. Much ns they dls
llko the occupation, and tho least
the men enn do Is to buy nt least one
ticket from them to glvo them en
courngement to ask another man to
do tho same. For It takes a great
amount, of courage to do that kind .of
work, nnd It sIiowb how Interested

SOMK HAMi OAMK TODAY.
Medford nnd Grants Pnss will meet
again today on the Medford diamond.
Tho gamo Is creating more than usu
al Interest. One of the hardest fought
sanies of the. season will be seen to
day. The Medford bunch is Just
rounding Into condition and getting
their batting eye. While Grants Pns
has a good team nnd have won foul
out, of tho five games played, the
homo boys think they hnvo an oven
shnnco to win. Tho games played
have been hotly contested, while
Grunts I'usg has got the edge, tho
Medford team does not concede, yet
(hat past games have shown their
relative strength and that they nre
(ho equal of Grants Pass In every
department excepting In tho catching
department, Outsldo of thnt there Is
llttlo to,chooso between tho two
teams. Tho Grants Pass boys nro hit
ting tho bull bettor than Inst season,
while tho Medford tea mhns fallen
down, and nre dubbed tho httless won
ders by tho Grants Pass dally.
Who knows? You piny seo another
of those heart-breaking games to
day, with Sheeliy and Osborno in
tho box. Tho gamo should bo anoth
er pitchers' battle. Flip n coin nnd
tnko your choice.
If, K. Neil, one of (he capitalists
connected with the Itogue River l'n
niil company, Ih a ureiit believer -in
the future of this valley. In nn in
terview Sutunlay lie said:
"On my first trip to this part of
Oregon, I was engaged to come here
and examine mining properly for nn
eastern company. After gelling
through with the work, I was so tok
en up with the country, I sjMjiit con
Hiderubble time looking over the hills
from Grants Pnss to Ashland. I be
lieve there is im better place in the
United Slates to live in than right
here in the Rogue river valley.
"Any good man with moderate
menus nud u family, that is willing
to work, will prosper on 10 acres of
irrigated lands. I can see thnt Mdy
ford valley in n'few years more all
ho brought up to a high cultivation.
When this comes about, there will be
no place that will be more beautiful
to live in. The surrounding hills
niong tbe edges of the valley make
ucntititul panorama scenerv. Thone
who Jive here will surely enjoy look
ing nt them from tiny to day.
"It won't he lone before'lhe whole.
valley will have splendid mncaderaized
roads so that you can spin nloiiL- with
an auto at n rapid rate. You deserve
great credit in building the city of
.Meoioru in such a short time, also
lor the great amount of street pave
ment your city has built in the Int
two years, Jt is n great surprise to
newcomers. This to me shows that
your good citizens must have pulled
together to have accomplished so
much lor your city in such n short
time.
"I believe if you will work with the
"nine energy to get families that are
willing to work and till the soil of this
valley in ten or twenty ncre tracts, in
time they will become verv nrosner-
ous. When this is brought about,
nothing wil prevent your city from
oeing very prosperous mid it will soon
renen u)t. ;,(i,u()n mark. Real good
tanning cloe to a young city like
Metfforil is one of the greatest nnet
to help along its growth. I have
seen mining towns built up to 10.000.
Then when the mines are worked out,
in a few years there might be half :
dozen jwople living in thut same
town."
"The people you get to till tbe soil
will be the means of bringing about
great changes. You will raise all
your own products, you will become
large exporters, tbe bard cash will
be coming in nd placed in your
oniiKs instead of going out of the
country. The moro money you have
in your city ami keep in circulation
tho more it will help all businesses. I
find that any community thnt keeps
sending out money to buy supplies
Hint they should raise nt home, it
won't be long before the other fel
low has nil tho money nnd all you
have left is your property."
