architect who gets a rake-off from the quarry.

Rogue' River valley. It is equal to or superior to that made
elsewhere and cheaper.
If you use lumber, help create a demand that will stim
ulate and encourage local manufacture by demanding local
product when possible. Thus will we realize upon our vast
timber resources.
You can specify home-made tiling and pipes, and many
other articles; they mean something to you and yours and
help build up your country.
All these articles furnish employment and payrolls and
develop home industry. And all' are needed. Do your
share by encouraging those who have made a beginning in
manufacturing here.

Medford, with KH-10 inhabitants, as the fifth citytif
Oregon, being exceeded in rank only bv Portland, with
'207,2 H; Salem, M,0JM: Astoria, OoOJ), and Mugene, 9009.
Before another decade shall have rolled around, Med
ford, which has grown from 1792 to 88-10 in ten years,
having inade a gain of !J92 per cent, will have become the
second city in Oregon, as it will excel all the others in rap
idity of growth during the coming ten years as it has
during the past.
The census effectually punctured the claims of many of
the Oregon towns, whose citizens fondly imagined their
cities much larger than the enumeration showed. While
all cities were disappointed, it is probable that the per
centage of uncounted in each did not vary much.
Ahiong the cities of southern Oregon, Medford leads,
with Ashland, 5020, second; Roseburg, I7!8, third; Grants
Pass, 15897, fourth; Marshfield, 2980, fifth; Klamath Falls,
2758, sixth, and North Bend, 2078, seventh.
In eastern Oregon, Raker City leads with (712. The
Dalles is second, with '1880; La Grande is third, with 18-l!i:
Pendleton fourth, with M0'0; Lakeview fifth, with 125:5;
Ontario sixth, with 12-18.
In western Oregon, outside Multnomah, Salem, Asto
ria and ICugene lead in order named; Gorvallis, '1552; Ore
gon Gitv has -1287; Albanv, -1275; Newberg, 22(50; .Dallas,
212l, a n'd Cottage Grove, 18IM.
The causes which will make Medford the second city
in Oregon are those which have already made it fifth
geographical location, natural resources and character of
citizenship.
Medford has just begun to realize upon its assets. It
is the logical site for a distributing point between Port
land and San hYancisco, a position which the Hill line will
strengthen. It is the center of rich horticultural, mineral
and timber wealth, of which development has only com
menced. It has the most progressive class of city builders
of any town in the northwest, who realize that destiny
lies in their own hands and the Uv of the city and vai
ley is limited only by their own energy.
