During tho last session of congress
the following clause wiib Inserted In
tho pontafflco appropriation bill:
"That th ro after forservlces re
quired on Sundays of supervisory of
ficers, clerks In first class and sec
ond clnss offices, and city letter car
riers, compensatory time off during
tho working days In amount equal
to that of the Sunday employment
may bo allowed off."
In so far as this affects the clerks,
suitable arrangements cun be made to
glvo thorn ono dny off In seven, al
ternating them on the Sunday work
and giving each clerk who works on
Sunday ono day off during tho week,
but as the carriers at present nro
working every Sunday, different ar
rangements will have to bo made.
It has therefore been suggested
and practically ordered by tho post
muater general that tho delivery of
mall through tho carriers' windows
bo discontinued horenfter, nnd the
following plan has boon devised:
The gonornl delivery window will
be kept open on Sunday from 8:30
to 9:110 for tho aceqmmodntlon of
the traveling public and thoso pat
rons of tho office whoso mall Is of
the utmost Importnnco and must bo
delivered on Sunday.
Malls will bo dispatched to tho
trains ns usual, and distributed to
the boxes.
Necessary mall will bo dollvored
on Sunday to patrons of tho dellvory
servlco who havo notified tho post
master In writing before tho hour of
R p. m. on tho Saturday provlous that
they desire to rocolyo such mall on
tho Sundny following,
Tho stamp, registry and monoy or
dor windows will remain closed all
day.
Special dellvory lettors will bo de
livered tho samo ns heretofore.
Tho question of closing postofflces
throughout tho country 'has been agi
tated more or Jess during tho past
year with the result that tho fore
going order has been Issued by tho
postmaster general. Tho department
has received numerous petitions from
conimorclnl bodies and religious or
ganlznllons, and letters from tho gon
ornl public requesting that all un
neceasary work bo discontinued on
Sunday. Practically all of tho larger
offlc.es In tho country havo closed on
