ASTERN TRIP
James T. Barber Tells How Orchards
of Missouri Are Passing Urges
Rogue River Growers to Stand Pat
on Values.
.Tamos T. Ilarbeo, accompanied by
his son, W. P., returned yesterday
from Missouri after a travel of some
IJOOO miles. Tho passing of tho "retlj
apple" country in southwest Missouri
to mako room for the livestock busi
ness was to him a sad picture Tho
orchards showed neglect and decay.
Tho burning of the Goodman peach
orchard in McDonald county, Missou
ri, entailing a loss in troes of over
$20,000 is ono of the strongest ovt
dences of decay. Tho fact that bo
valuable an orchard should bo allow
ed to grow onough weeds and grass
to furnish sufficient kinfllliiK to bum
up tho trees tells its own story. Tho
trip over tho Denver & Hlo Grande
country, where tho applo buslnoss has
boon advertised was a disappoint
ment. Tho lncroasod price in wheat for
several yours has also depreciated
tho orchard industry In oastern Kan
sas. KIght years ago Kansas City
markets wore supplied with Kansas
and Missouri npples. That day has
passed tho best wostern product soen
In tho wholesale and retail markets
woro a lot of inferior Jonathans and
Wlnesaps from Washington and Ida
ho. As a conclusion of his observations
Mr. Ilarboo brings
to tho fruitgrowers
SALEM, Or., March 22 "Here
after if. railroads do not divulge in
formation immediately when it is re
quested Mtbpoouns will be issued re
quiring officials to bring their books
to Salem," declared' Railroad Com
missioner Miller today.
"We have hud cotno difficulty iu
tiio past in this connection and re
cently were compelled to make the
throat that Southern Pacific officials
would be required to bring their books
to Salem from San Francisco if in
formation was withheld longer, and
the information was obtained.
"Hefore tho last legislature a hill
was introduced providing that rail
road companies must keep their
hoo1s nt some point iu Oregon, but
this bill i'niL'd. A promise was
giu'ii. however, that infornintion
would be given cheerfully. If it is
not we will take drastic measures to
secure it."
Evangelistic Meetings.
The evangelistic meetings in the
Presbyterian church nro attracting
many men, Kev. J. A. McVeigh, the
evangelist, was a impcr man, on tho
printing staff of tho Chicago Post
before his conversion. Ho knows
men ami can help them. Many nsked
for prayers Monday evening, mid for
prayer for friends ami lowd ones.
The meetings become nightly more
and more interesting. A splendid
service last night. Everybody come.
Tho city recorder's office has just
Installed a new Bafo cabinet for tho
protection of tho city's papers.
The safe Is absolutely fireproof, be
ing lined with asbestos and then hav
ing dry air chambers between tho
laye'-s of asbestos. This niako has
iMen tried by white heat and after
tho safe was cooled tho papers woro
found to bo intact.
"This safo cabinet supplies a great
need iu our office," says Recorder
Telfer, "and will facilitate our work,
but, best of all, our records now aro
absolutely protected against fire."
