Finds That Northwestern Fruit Ex
chanflc Averages Arc as Reported
by That Company Good F. 0. B.
Price for Local Ben Davis.
Under date of March 1 the North
western Fruit Exchange Issued tho
following bulletin:
Tim apple market continues to
eliow gradual Improvement, and there
is a very strong feeling among hold
ers" of cold storage stock. With the
advancing prices certain districts are
dropping out, but as the supply Is
very limited there Is no difficulty In
selling at very attractive prices all
offerings that are In first class con
dition and of good quality.
The following scales will serve to
show the strength of the situatien:
Preferred G12C from Medford, Oregon,-
March 1st, ISO 3' tier, 350
1 tier, 190 ! tier fancy Ben Davis,
at $2.00 per box, delivered Amarlllo,
Texas. Tho freight being $1.00 per
hundred, this Is equivalent to $1.50
per box f. o. b. for fancy lien Davis.
Preferred 5109 from Medford, Ore
gon, March 2nd, 35C 3 V and 4 tier
fancy Walbrldge, 330 4 4 tier, at
$1.50 straight f. o. b. Medford, to a
buyer In Richmond, Virginia.
Relative to the prices recently pub
lished by tho exchange covering this
season's operations In tho Cashmere,
Washington district, the following in
cident will bo found Interesting
Several days ago, Mr. C. E. Wills
ler, a prominent fruit grower of
Southern Oregon camo Into the office
of the exchange and stated that a
good many growers hnd stated to
hi in that these averages wcro "re
markable, If true." Mr. Whisler
stated to us frankly that wo had ad
vertised our willingness to permit
any fruit grower to vertlfy these fig
ures, and that he was here for tho
purpose of vertifying them. Ho sel
ected three varieties: Sultzenbergs.
Newtowns and Jonathans. Wo turn
ed over to mt. Wlilsler nil or our
original records which ho checked
against our statement. At the con
clusion of his examination it was
seen that tho published prices were
oxactly correct, not a single mis
take of any kind being found, the
following averages being vertlflcd:
Extra
Fancy Fancy Choice
Spltzenbergs ..$2.0ll $1.85 $1.35
Yellow New
towns 1.47 1.49 1.00
Jonathans 1.15 1.41 1.09
Furthermore, It was shown that
the Spltzenbergs represented in this
statonient were shipped in fifteen
different cars which were sold In
twolvo different markets, In all four
quarters of the country. Mr. Whis
ler expressed himself as being great
ly Impressed with this Bhowing, and
took his original statements with
him.
This Instances serves to Illustrate
tho open policy of this exchango In
dealing with the fruit growers of the
Northwest. Tho same spirit illus
trated In this incldont Is typical of
tho oxchango's nttitude In all mat
ters affecting the Industry.

Many on the Way.
Northern Europe will contribute a
large quota of settlers to tho small
army of homeseokers who will come
Northwest.
Tho west bound steamers leaving
grants coming to America. Most of
them nro heading for tho north west,
according to advices received by local
steamship and railroad agencies.
Northwest Likely Goal.
While there Is no reason to believe
that all theso travelers will como to
Oregon or even to tho Northwest, tho
fact that they aro seeking America
at a tlmo when tho railroad rates
glvo them special Inducements for
entering this portion of the country,
Indicates that they mny como hero in
great numbers.
Tho class of foreign immigration
carried by tho Canadian Pacific pas
senger steamers In such as usually is
sought by colonist agents. Those set
tiers nro recruited from English,
Scotch and Scandinavian laboring and
agricultural communities and most of
them aro eager to obtain homes on
farms In tho American north west.
From Central West.
Whllo Europe will furnish more
colonists than In previous years the
bulk of BetHora wllI como from cltleHi
towns and farms in the east and mid

farmers aro selling their places In the
Central states and aro moving their
household goods, fnrm machinery and
livestock Into the land of promise
