Lime-Sulphur Its Use as a
Fungicide and an Insecticide

and was first proposed by John Ituth
orford, New South Wales, Australia.
Its first us was that "of shcop dip,
and for a number of years was used
throughout the shocp growing dis
tricts of tho world for eradicating the
sheep scab.
L. Lime-sulphur was first used as
an insecticide on fruit trocs In 1SSG
ly Mr. P. Dusoy, of Prcano, California
who experimented with a shoop dip

properties as early as 1833. It was
recommended by Dr. William Ken

lime-sulphur as a fungicide, but his
recommendations, as well no earlier
ones, wore forgotten until about 1901
whan Mr. W. M. Scott, of tho depart
ment of ngrlculturo, took It up as a
remedy for tho brown rot of the
peach. In 1001, Mr. M. U. Walto,
also of tho doparfmont of agricul
ture, recommended It as a provontlve
treat mont for tho peach blight or
shot bolo disease of tho peach, aprl-

for plants having delicate foliage,
such as tho peach and Japanese plum
This sprny may bo used to control
the peach fruit spot dlseast-. For
small quantities tliu formula Is.
8 pounds unslaked lime,
8 pounds flour or flowers of sul
phur. 50 gallons of water.
For large quantities tho formula
should read:
31! pounds unslaked lime.
32 pounds flour or flowers of sul
phur. 200 gallons of water.
Tho heat of tho Hlaklng lime
should bo allowed to boll tho mixture
for about ten minutes, when the
apray tank, dlluted'to tho proper
proportions and applied to" tho trees.
Tho llmo ami sulphur should not be
boiled, nor should It bo allowed to
telf-cook too long, or too much sul
phldo of calcium will bo formed.
