TWO LADS FIGHT
FOR GIRL'S SMILE
Barn Near City Hall Was Scene of
Bloody Fight Between Lovers Girl
Waits In Vicinity to Learn Name
of Victorious Romeo.
The days of chivalry are not of tho
past, notwithstanding that this work
aday world of ours keeps the aver
age innn hustling so lively that he has
little time for the finer sentiments.
Two well known young Medfordltes
each enamored of the snmo young
lady, a wiuesomo golden-haired miss
still In her teens, met Inst night in
a barn not far from the city hall
and fought a bloody battle for the
smiles of tho maiden. Victory perch
ed on tho banner of the young man
who first laid claim to tho little
lady's favor. Rut ho was a sadly
bruised and marred Renieo, for the
lad who disputed his way was a stout
boy and a game one.
The battle arrangoinoiits wero
made on the yard yesterday after
noon by mutual friends of tho pair.
The time was fixed at 7:30 and the
place was chosen without nny hag
gling, the principals stipulating on
ly that the flht was to bo to the
bitter end. Tho girl was to be noti
fied by phone of the result of the
meeting, she having promised to wnlt
at the home of a friend until It was
known whotlier her love was to go
to him of the blonde locks or the lad
with the starlight black hair. Rumor
had It that he favored tho brunette,
she being a petite blonde.
Hut five persons witnessed the
mill, it was a fast and vicious one
from tho start and blood was plen
tiful. Flrat ono had the advantage,
then tho other. In the olght round
(for they fought as prize fighters do)
the blonde lover went to the tloor
and' he was unable to rise when the
referee counted ton. Tho dark
haired lad had won, but his victory
cost hlni much in tho way of blood
and bruise. Gallantly he stood bi
as his rival struggled to his feet,
whipped, but not disgraced. "You win
.lack." said the loser, holding out his
baud, "1 wish you luck."
Every effort to keep the story of
the fight a secret wan made by the
friend of tho girl and tho boys, but
news of It leaked out. Ono of the
friends of the defeated lad reluctant
ly admitted last night that the fight
had taken place, but he would not
give the names of the principals, and
he went so far at to threaten trouble
If tho naiuo of the girl was made
public.
"The fight began when one of the
bos asked the young lady If he could
take her to the performance of "The
Military Girl" on Friday nnd Satur

Proceedings Instituted Before Spe

Charging that he had come Into

Tho property Is situated seven miles

Lewis at no tlmo lived on tho prop
erty, and that ho made his home
upon his own section.
The hearing is being held in Grants
Pass and will close probably today.
