shoulders, Mrs. Eva Baker, aged 50
yrs Is an Inmate at St. Vincent's
hospltnl today as a result of a
Christmas tree fire. The woman
garbod as Santa Claus was preparing

and Mrs. Charles Crogstor. She was
lighting the caddies on the Christmas
tree when one of thorn ignited the
false beard she wore. The flames
were extinguished by Crogster, who
smothered them with a table cloth.
Dr. E. P. Geary today declined to'

nual Christmas swim of the Multno
mah Amateur Athletic club In the
Wlllimettc river today was won by
Lewis Thomas of the MultAomah club
who finished but a few feet ahead of
Dave Welch of the same club In the
view of thousands who crowded the
water front and the big bridges
spanning the river. H. Warner of
Vancouver, B. C. came third, and P.
McDonald or the Portland Y. M. C. A.
finished fourth. The race was 100
yards and Thomas finished In one
minute, two and three-fpiarters sec
onds. Thirty-threo men started and nil
but one finished. The temperature
in Portland today was IS degrees.
The participants after coming from
the -water said that It was not cold.
