TJ 1 15 MAJ h TKI IJUNJ3 VS Now Year's issue will be com
piled by local experts and edited by its own staff.
..The advertisments will be solicited and prepared by its
own staff. No foreign )romoter will have any part in the
making, or carry away any part of the proceeds.
The edition is designed to serve as an advertisement
of the resources, progress, development and growth of the
Rogue River valley. ft will serve to call attention to this
section and its possibilities, and being up-to-date, will be
most reliable.
Merchants each year waste a considerable sum of
money for the benefit'of the traveling'or local advertising
grafter. They receive no returns for the money thus in
vested. Money spent in advertising in the Mail Tribune not
only brings results, but it goes to support an instiution
creditable to the valley, helps support a considerable pay
roll, and helps to make possible one of the best newspapers
published in any small city Medtord s best advertise
ment, for all places are judged by their newspapers.

JOHN M. SCO't'T, assistant general passenger agent, re
turning from tlie east, utters a word of warning re
garding Oregon advertising in the east.
"Oregon is giving too much attention to apple-growing
to tlio exclusion of its numerous other worthy industries,"
said Mj. Seott.
"People in the east are gaining the idea, and er
roneously, that we don't produce anything but apples here.
They haven't been told that Oregon is one of the greatest
grain, small fruit, timber and livestock states in the union.
"Our constant exploitation of the apnle industry, with
the high prices that of necessity prevail tor good apple or
chards, is actually scaring away the settler of small means,
fn our enthusiasm over the apple we have woefully neg
lected some ol the resources that are entitled to their pro
portion of attention."
Air. Scott is correct. We do pay too much attention in
the apple, even m tlie Kogue river valley. We all want the
fruit-grower, but we do not want him to exclusion of other
settlers.
There is as much or more opportunity here for the lum
ber manufacturer and for the miner,' than is for the
fruit grower. We are shipping in yearly hundreds of cars
of lumber with immense forests at our doors. We are im
porting hundreds of thousands of fruit boxes, with the best
of material a few miles away. We ajie importing coal, with
immense coal deposits within sight of the city.
With a record()f nearly fifteen million dollars' yield
from our placer piines, with practically all the ground to
the vyest of the valley carrying color, with hundreds of gold
bearing quart, veins, scatehed to gyass roots and none
scientifically developed, and but few producing, with a mil
lion dollars' worth of work done to open up one of the
greatest confer mines in the countrv. and hundreds of cop
per prospects, the number of men and the amount of capital
einpldyedjn mining is ridiculously small.
(Iranite and marble quarries, live deposits and a hun
dred other natural resources invite the developer and
Rogue KMver valley should make its appeal for them as well
as for its red and ellow apples and its golden pears.
