TOLSTOI'S LAST
LITEARY IRK
Writer's Final Efforts Were Against
Capita.! ,Puiish:iicnt. Author Says
He Is Anxious to Do All Ko Can
Against Evil
ST. IETI3r.SnURG, Nov. SISXTho
Aasoclated Press loclved early to
day from Vladimir Tachcitkoff, lit
erary nggnt of tlio Into Count Tolstoi,
thu last artlclo wrltton by Tolstoi.
It v,ns untitled "Effective Means." It
was written by Tolstoi uhortly after
lie began' his self-imposed e.xllo from
home
Tho article says: "I am naturally
anxious to do all 1 can against evil,
which toiturcs the best spirits of our
time,
"I think the present offcctlvo war
against capital punishment docs not
need forcing; there is no need for an
expression of Indignation against Its
Immorality, cruelty and absurdity.
Tiiero Is no need for descriptions of
tho horrors of executions, as they
only affect hangmen.
'Therefore I think that neither tho
' expression of Indignation against tho
nnirder of our fellow men nor the
suggestion of, its horror Is mainly
needed, but something totally differ
ent. "What knowledge need wo commu
nicate to tho, deluded mind regard
ing tho Indlsponsabloness, usefulness
or justice of capital punishment In
order that said delusion may destroy
Itself.
1 "Such knowledge, In my opinion, Is
this: The knowledge of what is man,
What his surroundlifc world; what
his destiny; hone, what, man can and
must do and prlnclpallywhat ho can
not and must not do.
"Therefore wo should oppose cap
ital' punishment by Inculcating this
knowledge lu all men, especially to
hangmen's managers and sympathiz
ers who wrongfully think thoy are
maintaining their position, thanks
buly to capital punishment.'" "
