AN INTERESTING COMPARISON

The above figures were gathered from towns in 41' states
where conditions other than excise were equal.
They conclusively prove that prohibition creates higher
taxes and generally adds to the cost of living.
One year after Atlanta Was voted "dry" the tax rate in
creased 40 per cent.
In29 Kansas towns under State-wide Prohiibtion the tax"
rate is as high as $5.63 on $100.
In Birmingham, Ala., with the advent of Prohibition the
city authorities wove compelled to place a special tax on
every class of business ranging from blacking boots to the
public utility corporations, said tax ranging from $2.50
to $15,000.
Tn most places where prohibitory legislation has been en
acted a deficit has followed; public buildings have been
neglected because there was no money in the treasury to
keep them up; schools have been closed or at best run on
short time; and "the public debt has increased at a startling
rate.
In Los Gatos, Cal., a prohibitory and search law, such as
is now proposed in your own state, were put into effect.
What was the result?
Wives and daughters were insulted by - " - icers who .
came to search houses.during the absence of the husbands
and fathers. After a short trial of such an outrageous im
position Los Gatos went back to the old regime of license
by an overwhelming majority; the prohis welcoming it
most, no doubt, as they could nuot stomach this infamous
search law. '
