A Plea for the Normals
To the Editor:
Thero is 110 .interest that so strong
ly appeals to the average voter as
ono educational interests. A week
hence the people will pass upon the
'question at the polls. I sincerely
hope their verdict will quicken into
Hfo the threo normal schools at Ash
land. Monmouth and Weston, thus
giving a normal school to each of
the three groat sections, southern,
"western and eastern Oregon. It re
quires 400 teachers eaOh year in
JOrcgoli to supply the demand. Some
W those arc orawn from other states,
tfx few from our own high schools
and colleges; tho bulk of them, it
is sad to relate, are drawn from the
eighth grade public schools. Tho 0.
A. C. and U. of 0. have each just an
nounced they cannot begin to meet
the demands now made upon them
for teachers. Our own young men
and women are left by their slate
without opportunity or encourngc-i
input to enter tho teaching profession
well clipped. Fourteen of Jackson
county's .students are now enrolled
in California normal schools. In tho
, northern part of tho state the Wash
ington state normals supply the op
portunity for normnl school training.
Educated in surounding states where
jenchers' wages are good, Oregon will
in most instances lose their teachers.
The states that educate them will be
blcsed by their work. Wo have a
( wealth of material but no mnehinory
for its development. There should
bo threo normal schools in Oregon.
Every state in tho union save five,
has moro than ono normnl school.
Even Iowa, long pointed to as a ono
school state, has established an
other normal school.
Tho best authorities hold thnt a
nonnal school with from 250 to 500
stude-th graduating from 50 to 75
each ear civos tho maximum return,
considered with the outlay. DiC
Seorly, presidont of Iowa's only nor
mal 'schorl, in 1005 said: "The.
school is so large that tho average
senior has but a mere glance- into
the training school." The training
school is the essence of normal
school work. Our stato has at Ash
land, Monmouth and Weston each a
property worth from $40,000 to $(10.
000. Each has 'buildings, grounds,
furniture and libraries lit for tho
accommodation of 300 students. Tiie
first great expense of establishing
a normal school system has been
met. Tho proposed law gives ample
maintenance to each of these schools.
C ireful estimates disclose that a
taxpayer who pays taxes on $1000
would contribute but four (4) cents
oa ch year to each institution. I
t' ns southern Oregon will show her
progressive spirit by again voting
ii she has when an educational in
stitution was up for attack. The
vte in this section for tho schools
u 'dor tho referendum of 190G was
i. imendous and that vote saved the
i.ato university in 1008. Just now
t'irce measures thnt affect us nenrly
n'ld remdtoly appeal' to us for suc
cor. Let us make it unnnimous for
the normal schools.
The stillness of death pervades the
old normal school grounds and
buildings. Let us awaken this soli
tudo with the busy hum of student
life and forco open tho door of op
portunity to the young people of
southern Oregon and tho stato by
establishing on a firm basis thoso
schools which come nenroi to (he
homes of the people than do nil
othors. Very respectfully,
B. F. MULKEY,
