jury summoned by Coroner Hnrtwell
to pass upon tho deaths of tho twon-ty-ono
victims of tho Times disnstor
October 1, met today. Eleven wit
nesses had been summoned and the
taking of testimony began at once.
Tho first witness cnllod was Herbert
C. Leonard, a night clerk in tho ad
vertising office of the Times. Ho
described tho physical features of the
explosion nnd declared thnt thoro
were two distinct detonations. The
. second almost as great in volume as
the ,first. Leonnrd was followed by
W. E. Tribet, an employe who was
reading in the editorial room when
tho explosion occurred. Tribet tes
tified thnt ho did not smell gns be
fore tho explosion, although ho no
ticcd an odor, similar to gns which,
lio said, wns' always noticeable near
a stereotyping machine.
