For a few seconds there was silence.
Then, suddenly uplifting his head and
looking at no one, Lowndes desperate
ly plunged into his narrative. "I I

old, and then, to my horror, I heard
her voice, and in a second she was In
the room. She gave one awful scream,
though I tore off my cap and begged
her to know me, but she fell in a
faint. Others were coming. I broke
out of the back window and slid and
scrambled down tho roof to tho shed
and so to the ground. I heard men
come running, so I dived into tho coal
bed, where the sergeant grabbed me
In the dark, and I had to make him let
go and said T was Lieutenant Lanier.
Later I crawled through a hole In the
fence and started for the store, scared
out of my wits. Right at the next gate
I crashed into two men. I picked my
self and cap up and ran again, caught
Cary at the store Just Jumping into a
sleigh, and we lashed those horses ev
ery Inch of the way, left them at a
ranch gate and ran to the station.

Many housewives say it is impossible
to make a good fruit cake without but
ter. The recipe below will give you
as rich, flavory a fruit cake as you ever
tasted; yet there is no butter in it:
Mix four cups sifted pastry flour, one
level teaspoon soda, two level teaspoons
mixed spices (except cloves), one
fourth level teaspoon salt and two cups
seeded and quartered raisins. Add also
one-half cup nuts chopped fine, if you
like. Blend one-half cup Cottolene with
one cup brown sugar and one cup white
sugar, add one cup molasses, one cup
milk1 and then the flour mixture. Beat
well and bake in two pans.
