tho Puget eound navy yard, Secretary
of tho Navy Meyer declared himself
in favor of a hotter dofonslvo system
for tho Pacific coast.
"That explains my visit,'' ho Bald.
"I havo come here to look Into con
ditions nnd make, preparations for a
proper dofonso of the Pacific coast.
"Boforo that can bo dono, how
ovor, caro must bo taken that this
coast can maintain a fleet. It can
not do so now. For, whilo you hnvo
n fine dopth of water In Puget sound,
your present dock would not nccom
modato moro than half tho smaller
ships of tho navy. Wo cannot, there
fore, dlvldo our Atlantic fleet at this
time. Your now dock will not bo
