Thirty-five persons were killed in a
hekcUon collision between two Wn
bnsh valley traction cars this nftcr
noon near Kiugslnnd and 20 were
injured.
The Wnbnsh Valley road is nn
electric interurbun line operating be
tween Fort Wayne and Lognnsport,
Inn. The accident occurred near
Kingslnnd, in Wells county, south of
hore. The two cars that crashed
were specials.

has borne an evil reputation since

the habit of hinting mysteriously of
crimes hitherto performed.
JesBo Smith, tho murdered man,
had served in the Sevonth United
States cavalry for a number of years.
He bad seen active service in tho
Philippines and during tho Boxer up
rising in China, as five bullet scars
and ono bolo cut on his body testi
fies. For four years Smith was a
Texas ranger. Ho was 35 years old
and unmarried.
An Eyo Witness' Story.
The tragedy is described by David
Martin, ono of the two eyewitnesses,
as follews:
"Mock and Jesse went hunting to
gether on Labor day up Griffin creek.
Jesse got tired as they found no
game and returned homo. Mock's
dog followed hlrn. Jesso tied tho
dog up, fed and took care of It.
On Mondny Mrs. Mock camo after
the dog. Jesso 1b said to havo Jok
ingly said: 'I haven't your dog.' She
thought that he was lleing to her
and becamo angry. Finally Smith
gavo her the dog.
"The next evening McMullen, Jesse
and I wero sitting around tho table

from his home across tho street to

wero talking together, when there
was a knock on the door. McMullen

was too Jaw. Jesse said quietly:
'He has killed mo,' and fell face
downward on the floor. I asked
McMullen to go and telephone for a
doctor. I ran outside to see If there
was any help In sight, and at tho
door met Mro. Mock, who said:
Josse hit first, and don't you Ho
about It.' I returned to Jesso and
tried to got rooponBe from him, but
ho could not talk. After a minuto or
two tho struggling ceased and I know
that tho man was dead.
"I bellevo that the murder was pro
meditated acd that Mock camo with
an opon knlfo in his pocket with tho
Intention of doing damage to Smith,"
