CHICAGO, Sept. 10-Colonel Rooso- Telt's refusal to Bit at tho table with Senator William Lorlmcr of Illinois at the Hamilton club's banquot last evening, and the club's subsequent withdrawal of Lorlmcr's Invitation, threaten today to havo far-reaching effects. Roosevelt's stand is commended by every morning paper except the In-ter-Occan. Tho newspapers predict almost unanimously that tho inci dent will result in widening the al ready wide breach existing in tho republican ranks in Illinois. The Hamilton club Immediately too sides when President Patten wir ed Lorlmcr last evening withdraw ing the invitation. Lorlmer Is a prominent member of tho organiza tion and has a large following. His friends aro highly indignant. It ap pears certain that a deluge of reslg nations will follow. The mixture, it is said, is undoubtedly the best all-round fungicide known, and it is unfortu nate that the apple growers havo to consider the possibility of giving it up; but the russeting of the fruit and the burning of the foliage caused by it are so objectionable that it seems highly desirable, if not neces sary, to adopt a less injurious fun gicide oven at the risk of a partial sacrifice of efficiency in the control of diseases. Ji During the past three years tho writer has been working on tho prob lem of securing a satisfactory sub stitute for Bordeaux mixture and not without some success. The self boiled lime-sulphur wash which was developed primarily ior spraying peach trees, has been found to be an excellent spray for the control of 'mild cases of apple diseases and to be entirely harmless to fruit and fol iage. The concentrated lime-sulphur solutions, both commercial and home prepared, when diluted to contain about four pounds of sulphur to 50 gallons of water, have proved to be about as effective in the control of apple scab and leaf-spot as Bor deaux mixture and to be much less injurious. Experiments conducted by the bu reau of plant industry during 1909 give evidence of the value of the lime-sulphur sprays as fungicides for summer use. These experiments cover a wide range of conditions, having been conducted in Virginia, Michigan and Arkansas. Eleven va rieties were treated. Four different brands of the commercial lime-sulphur solution and a similar home prepared solution were tested at va rious strengths. The commercial brands registered from 31 to 33 de--grees on the hydrometer scale. They were used alono and in combination with arsenical poisons. , The acreugo in apple orchards in this country is rapidly increasing, and in tho future the production of apples will undoubtedly be much greater than at present. Tho writer is of the opinion, however, that there vill be no serious overproduction, land that there will always bo a good demand for good apples, while tho .poor stuff so common on our mar kets today will not pay the expenses of handling. It should bo the aim of ,;every orchardist to uroduco and 'market nothing but first-class fruit, and if he docs this ho may reason ably expect always to obtain good returns from bis investment. 3 (For State Senator t Statement No. I Candidate. "Within the next six years tho Panama canal will be completed and when it Is completed the great vital commercial issue with the state of Washington is going to be whether tho charges through that canal are made nl your interests and in the in terests of tho state, or whether they aro to be fixed for the benefit of the trans-continental railroads. "John L. Wilson has withdrawn from the contest. He was tho most formidable opponent. His following was to a largo extent political fol lowers.
