ASHLAND HELD
BKUMTION
First Observance of Labor Day In
Nearby City Is Success Elks'
Band Heads Parade Through the
City's Streets.
ASHLAND, Or., Sept. C The
first celebration of Labor day ever
given in Ashland was very success
ful. There were about 100 men be
longing to the Carpenters' & Joiners'
union in line, comprising members of
the Ashland and Medford branches
of that organization. They were
headed by tho Elks bank of this city
and marched through Main street to
the plaza, nnd thence to tho Chau
tauqua auditorium, where the exer
cises of the day were held.
The address of welcome was deliv
ered by Mayor H. N. Snell. He was
followed by President C. IJ. Watson
of the Commercial club, who deliv
ered a brief address. Mr. Strickland
of the Carpenters' union nlso made
an address and Miss Maly, a social
ist organizer, delivered a radical ad
dress along those lines. The meet
ing was presided over by S. J. Tor
xence, president of tho local Cnr
penters' union.
After the exercises the Medford
visitors nnd many of the Ashland In
bor men gathered in Chautnuqun
park and enjoyed arbasket picnic.
Tho afternoon was devoted to a
program of amateur athletic sports
and games and to a general social
good time, tho visitors returning to
Medford on tho ovohing train.

A THOUSAND PHONES.
AN index of the phenomenal growth of Medford is
the report of the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph
Company to the effect that it has connected over a thou
sand telephones at the Medford exchange.
It is hut a few years since one operator could hardly
keep busy answering the calls of the few phones in Med
ford. Today a score of girls are kept on the jump, and
a new switchboard is necessitated for the near future.
Mcdford's increase in phones exceeds that or. am
other city in the country. No other town of the same
population has as many phones and in none has the
increase per capita oecn as rapid.
Bjit phones are not the only thing that show a rapid
increase and a phenomenal percentage per capita in Med
ford. There arc automobiles, over 400 in use, or one for
every 25 persons. Then there are more cash registers
in use than in any other city of equal population, and
there are also more typewriter machines than in any
other city of similar size.
In fact it is hard to name any modern improvement
or convenience that the people of Medford do not take
advantage of, showing not only the rapid growth, but
the unusually high standard of intelligence among the
inhabitants, proving that Medford is the most metropoli
tan city of its size anywhere.
PROOF OF GOOD CITIZENSHIP.
LESS than a week remains in which to register in
order to vote at the primaries to be held the latter
part of this mouth.
It is a vital part of good citizenship to vote intelli
gently at all elections. Under the laws of Oregon the
people have more to say regarding government than in
any other state, and every citizen should take an active
part, thus justifying the responsibilities placed upon his
shoulders.
In many of the states the people have nothing to
say as to who shall be the candidates of their party.
TJnder Oregon's direct primary law they have all the

Cholera Prevails.
MILAN. Sept. C. Barleta, In the
cholera district Is under martial
law as the result ot yesterday's clash
between the Italian soldiery and
thousands of starving peasants.
Traces of the rioting and disorder
which prevailed throughout the day
havo not yet been removed from the
streets. This morning an ominous
calm prevailed, but the rebellious
outbreak against law and order Is
believed by be only smoldering and
serious trouble is momentarily ex
pected. Goaded Into desperation by hunger
and seeing their relatives and friends
dying all around them by tho terrible
disease, the masses are almost uncon
trollable. Yesterday's disorders assumed the
proportions of a pitched b:.ttle, In
which women and children fought
alongside tho men. The Ignorant
peasants maddened by tho Inability
of tho physicians and tho Red Cross
to cope with tho cholera and their
own helplessness, vented their rage
by storming tho hospitals.
Before assistance, in tho form of
Infantry, arrived many of the sur
geons wore roughly handled. Sever
al mmnnnles of Infantry arrived at
the scene of the worst disorder simul
taneously and charged the mob wiui
Hmwn bavonots. Men, women and
children stood their ground, fighting
back with clubs and stones nnd oven
with knives. Thirty soldiers were
wounded and a largo number of per
sons In tho mob woro bayoneted.
Many more were knocked down anu
tmarpled on.
Since tho cholera outbreak tho
importation of vegetables and fresh
foods have been prohibited, and wa
ter hydrants havo beon shut off un

Mr. Noill expressed himself as he

made by the company, nnd congrntu

and its extensivo municipal improve
ments, nnd the general buildiu'g ac

When Mr. Neill was asked what
the policy of the Rogue River Valley
Canal company would be, when the
company would begin active con
struction on the intermediate nnd
hiuh line canals, and what the com
pany would do regarding the devel
opment of "the desert," Mr. Neill
discussed the matter at length and
left no doubt us to the intention of
tho company.
"The company owns CoOO acres of
land, known locally as "the desert."'
said Mr. Neill. "These lands will be
immediately irrigated and developed,
many acres will be planted to young
orchards and all of the land will be
leveled and irrigated. The plowing
will begin within a very short period,
for our plowing outfit is already on
the ground, and with the exception
of a few minor parts of the machin
ery", we are now ready to begin the
plowing and general development of
this area. We havo taken up the
reclamation o fthis desert land, and
wo will continue our work until the
whole tract is leveled, irrigated and
planted to orchards.
To Extend System.
"In addition to tho development of
tho desert, our company will bo pre
pared to extend its system so as to
include the entire valley, but wo must
know nnd feel that tho people are
with us before these extensions are
undertaken. Wo regard this invest
ment like any other, and wo natur

We boliovo that the orchardists, gar
deners and farmers of this district
want irrigation, nnd we are ready
to build the system, but wo mu.st
know whether or not tho people are
interested before we can make this
oxtensive investment. Wo contem
plate the investment of 2,000,000,
which in itself is worth tho sorious
consideration of every business man
in Medford, for every man in busi
ness will derive some benefit from
the work going forward. Such .111
enterprise in this vnlley will bo of
vast benefit to Medford, nnd the
Medford orchard district, and while
tho company will without question
find it profitable itself, it is of mu
tual benefit to both the company and
the people, and wo feel that we aro
entitled to tho support of every one
in our enterprise.
