SAN FRANCISCO HAS
A MATCHLESS CLAIM
"Four million dollars subscribed
to the Panama Pacific fund In two
hours!"
"Seven and a halt million dollars
already subscribed!"
"Ten million moro to be secured at
the special session of tho legislature
called by the governor for this pur
pose!" These are but a few of the memo
randa that San Francisco and Califor
nia ask tho nation to put down In its
book, when considering the awarding
of the Panama Pacific exposition at
the opening of tho canal in 1915. In
presenting their claim for this honor
the city and state not only point with
prido to tho ideal climate &nd natural
facilities and site for a world's fair
but call attention to the character of
their people and their record for
achievement
It Is argued that tho exposition
must bo awarded to a people who will
make of it a triumphant success for
the nation, a success worthy of the
achievement which It is to commem
orate. The caliber of Callfornians i
and San Franciscans is ot the bigness
ot tho west and the solid west la
behind San Francisco's claim.
The caliber of San Franciscans was
proven to the world In the rebuilding
of their city, totally destroyed by fire,
in less than three years. The temper
of their mettle was shown when they
raised four million dollars in two
hours to the exposition fund, and
have added three and a half millions
since. Their determination to secure
tho exposition will be shown when
ten million dollars more Is obtained
at the special session of tho legisla
ture. "A fifty million dollar show the
greatest In the history of the world!"
This Is tho promise of San Fran
cisco to the world a promise backed
by tho Golden State and fortified by
the great west. That largeness and
generosity which is characteristic of
the pioneers of the west 1b equaled
by their capacity for enjoyment
it
A. I
is tho best worker who plays best.
Your westerner Is an ideal host. And
he accomplishes what ho sets out to
do. He promises a fifty million dollar
ahow and he is a man of his word.

SAYS CREDIT SHOULD
60 TO INSURGENTS
M'COOK, Neb., Aug. 30. Admit
ting that President Taft's campaign
letter Is an ablo document, Congress
man Norris, leader of tho Insurgents
In tho house, declared the progres
sives -were really responsible for most
of tho legislation about which tho
president talked.
"Taft's campaign statement is an
able document." said Norris, "but It
should be remembered that to tho
despised insurgents ot the house and
senate Is due the credit for all the
progressive legislation of the last
congress. The people should remem
ber that tho Cannon-Aldrlch machine

born In Long Beach, Cal., Juno 6,
1910. Fell asleep In Jesus August
23, 1910, In Butto Falls, Or., aged

10:13-16.
The little one has passed over, and
taken possession of his inheritance,
which our heavenly father had willed
to him, and ' now enjoying the
riches of father's house.
A precious rosebud plucked from
earth, has gone to bloom In yon
der sky;
To us no one can tell its worth; Oh,
let us meet it by and by!
A lesson God would have us learn,
his blessed providence we own;
By this ho bids us here bo firm and
meet tho child around his throne.
'Twas planted here by Lim whoso
love would draw our hearts to
yonder shore;
'Twas taken to the courts above,
whore Joys abound forever more;
In yonder floral clime so fair, its
fragranco ever shall Increase;
No hand can pluck It over there; Its
angel voice shall never cease.
Bright hope wo cherish In our heart
of mooting loved one3 gone be
fore; Wo wait with eagerness to start,
when thl3 short life on earth Is
o'er.
Then let us cay: "Thy will bo done,"
and meekly bear this trial great;
O Savior, leave us not alone, for help
and graco on thee we wait.
