iiiR to the protest of the Women's
Christian Temperanco Union against
tho ncceptnnco by tho officers of the
cruiser California of 100 cases of
wines presented by tho California
Wine association, the Navy Depart
tuent has politely announced that
thero is no uavl regulation to prevent
the cusigus and middies t riling with
the juico of the grape.
In the communication tho depart
ment, the temperance advocates refer
red to a regulation said to have been
isucd by Secretary of the Navy John
D. Long somo years ago, forbidding
the use of wino on wnrships. Tho
present secretary has been unable to
locate this order and intimates a
doubt that it ever existed.
The announcement by Secretary
Meyer has brought joy to the hearts
of tho junior mess on the various war
ships, where a drouth would, they
think, have impaired seriously the
efficiency of tho fighting men. .
A storo that always advertises Is

plctcd Hllicontcrs Used in Descent
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 19. Back
ed by Euseno Do Snbla, Eugene Sloss,
Dr. John D. Oallwey and sovoral oth
er of Snn Francisco's wealthy mon,
V. T. Murray, Inventor, will launch
a monster dirigible balloon In Sep
tember, with which ho hopes to es
tablish passenger sorvlco by way of
tho air lanes to Los Angolca.
Tho scheme- Is In moro than an
early staso. Tho bis aluminum
frame for the craft was completed
today. Within a month tho finish
ing touches will have been added.
Murray has developed an Idea
herotoforo untried by aeronauts,
namely, tho uso of hcllcoptors as a
means of ascent, descent and horizon
tal propulsion of tho big wind buck
er. Thoso helicopters, or piano pro
pollers, will project several feet from
tho framo cf tho balloon and will bo
capable of being turned up or down
as occasion demands. Threo powerful
gas motors, especially constructed,
will drive tho screw nt enormous
speed.
Tho llghter-than-alr part of tho
balloon will bo arranged ncocrdlng to
an Invontlo of Murray's whereby a
perfect equilibrium is maintained,
tho gas not being used a a means
of ascent, but merely to afford buoy
ancy. Tho helicopters aro depended
on to furnish tho motion.
After several trial trips about tho
bay counties Murray will sot sail for
Los Angeles," going down the valleys.
"When ho has acquainted himself
with the air currents, ho will open a
regular passenger servlco between
tho two cities, charging only a com
paratively small fare. It is hoped by
the millionaire backers of tho pro
ject eventually to put tho dirigibles
made famous by Zeppelin into com
mercial use up and down tbo Pacific
coast. They assert that tho wind
and climatic conditions aro moro fa
vorable In California than In Ger

dent unless ho helped to cleoto a re
publican president 14 years ago. It
would promote harmony for six nnd
a half million of people to announce
that thoy gladly would follow one who
laid down his anus and went over
to the enemy, wouldn't it also pro
moto harmony for thoso who aro loft

"Bryan is not at liberty to con
