WITH BROKEN NECK HE
HAS LIVED FOR SIX YEARS
PHILADELPHIA, duly 18. Sur

pects for n long life, John Donnoud,
ti half breed Indian, is living tit -If)!
Perot street. His case is said to bo
without a parallel in surgical his
tory. Tho accident which crippled Dor
inoiid occurred on Muy If), 1001, in
the yards of Armour & Co., on South
Delaware avenue, where he was em
ployed in running cattlo from the
cars into tho pens. While standing
beneath one of the runways it gave
way and n steer fell upon him. His
head was driven between his shoul
ders, breaking his neck. His skull
was fractured, both shoulders wore
dislocated and five ribs, one nnn nnd
both legs broken. There wore also
internal injuries. At tho Pennsyl
vania hospital Dermond was stretch
ed in an extension nppnrntus and cu
ciibod in plaster. So he remained for
six mouths, unconscious most of the
time, lo tho surprise of tho physi
cians, he gradually regained tho use
of his faculties and his limbs.
Upon leaving the hospital a har
ness to support his head was fixed
up for Dermond and ho woro it mobt
of tho time up to a year ago. Since
then lie has worn it vory little.
Dermond takes long walks in Fair
mount Park, but ho has to bo strap
ped to his bed at night to cheek utiy
suddon movement which might dislo
cuto something. Ho never sleeps, but
lies in a kind of stupor, hearing dis
tinctly the slightest sound nenr him.
