Crippen. Dr. Pepper believes that
the mutilated remains are those of
tho famous singer, but he declines to
swear to that belief.
Meanwhile the police arc seeking
Crippen and his alleged companion,
Mle. Ethel Lcncve, even though they
have nothing legally to show that
Mrs. Crippen is dead. This has
enused them to postpone holding the
inquest until today.

Boy Stole for Sweetheart.
TRENTON, N. J., July 18. His
sweetheart's love for sweets and
pleasure led Lester Stevenson, 19
years old, to grief today, when he
admitted to Police Justice Harris
that he stole a sum of money from
his boarding mistress, Mrs. Sarah
Reed.
"I didn't want to be cheap, and I
spent more money than I could af
ford and then had to steal," declar
ed tho youthful prisoner. He ex
plained tho "fellow" his sweetheart
had before him used to spend about
0 a week on her.
Stevenson assorted that he en-'
dcavored to be even more generou
and he admitted that his income was
only $8 a week. The judge's heart
softened nnd he placed the prisoner
on probation with a warning to get
a less costly girl.

WEALTHY BROKER KILLS
WIDOW; THEN HIMSELF
CHICAGO, III., July 18. Tho po
lice today are investigating tho rela
tions of Charles W. Iligdon, do,
wealthy broker, and Mrs. Emma
Doufox, a young4 widow, to learn
what prompted the broker to shoot
Mrs. Donfez and then kill himself.
Tho authorities found two letters
in the broker's pocket after the
shooting, tho contents of which have
not been made public. It is believed,
however, they will throw somo light
on tho case. It is known both were
written by a woman. The shooting
occurred in tho office of John C.
Febor. Accompanied by Miss Mnr,v
Wilson of Hinsdale, III,, Mrs. Doufox
visited Iligdon in Fcber's office Af
ter seriously wounding tho widow,
tho broker turned the luvolvor on
himsolf and died instantly. Mrs.
Doufox is in St. Luke's hospital. Miss
Wilson was arrested and is being
held as a witness. It is said that
Mrs. Doufox attempted the fulfill.
