18 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, ORROOSTOBAY. MAY If). 1910. OUR CLUB. AND WHAT JT MEANS Somo of the Alms and Purposes of the Greater Medford Club Its Membership Is Increasing Rapidly and Will Soon Include all tho Pro nressivo Ladies of Medford. (MRS. E. E. GOHE.) Tho organization of tho Greater Medford club was eliectea April -u.i 1903, nt tho homo of Mrs. . I Vuwtcr, with n charter membership of twenty. Tho club was organized for tho purpose of raising funds to adequately represent Southern Ore gon nt tho Lewis and Clark exposi tion and to act as an auxiliary to tlm hoard of lndv managers. Tho first officers were: President, Mrs, L. B. Hubbs; first vice-president Mrs. J. D. Heard; second vice-presi dent. Mrs. Helen Haskins; secretary Mrs. M. L. Alford; treasurer, Mrs I. A. Webb. In 1904 the first work of civic improvement was undcrtnk en when Mrs. J. A. Whitman, now a prominent club woman of New York proposed that the dreary waste of the park blocks should be reclaimed and tho eround be seeded and oth enviso improved. The details of pre paring tho soil, the arrangement of walks and the selection and instal lation of the fountain were worked out at much expenditure of time and energy. The specinl work connected with tho exposition having been ac complished, tho name was changed from "The Lewis and Clark club" to "Greater Medford club," October 24. 1907. and one month later the second characteristic effort of the ladies was made, when the library, supported by a coterie of general readers, was changed from a private enterprise into a public benefaction. As jn any other work seriously undertaken, tho principal difficulty of the club has been to secure suf ficient funds to carry on tho work. Tho lenders in the clnb activities have from the first been ladies pos sessing executive ability and social tact, and to say that every effort in which the co-operation of the public has been enlisted has met with sur prising and overwhelming support of the local townspeople does not over state the case. I and of tho immediate future is to in crease tho efficiency of the library and to secure more lands for park purposes, both great undertakings, and demanding patience no less than business ability. Many minor activities have engag ed the club's attention during the past seven years. Many thirsty horses have been refreshed at the public watering troughs installed at convenient street . crossings, while drinking fountains have been placed on prominent corners. Block day netted the Indies $375 and an abund ance of flowers and apples were pro vided for tho recent Portland busi ness men's excursion. No little ag gressive and effectivo work was doue at the recent school election in get ting out property holders to vote. All this work appeals with especial force because of certain humanitarian and artistic instincts, to the feminine mind and is worthy of the heartiest support. As tho town grows in wealth and population the necessity for and the scope of the work increases, re sponsibilities weigh more heavily and the opportunities to serve the town Why Do People Buy Dirt of Us ? r BECAUSE We list only first class propositions.
