The big tabernacln at North
Uartlett near Jackson street, was
emfortably filled for the opening of
Ike evangelistic campaign yesterday
morning when Rev. Shields stepped
os the platform and in a few brief
Temarks called attention to the aus
pieioua circumstances which attend
ed the opening of the meetings. The
almost perfect day, the large at
tendance, the enthusiasm with which
all churches had fallen in line, form
ing a sold, unbreakable chain that
-was sure to hold throughout the ser
vices. Dr. Oliver came before his hear
ers, the picture of health and
strength.
Dr. Oliver preached on "Prayer"
and greatly impressed his audience
with bis many vivid illustrations. He
showed conclusively that prayer was
shown in the fields of grain and corn
the flowers and grass on the hot
summer day, when every leaf, petal
or blade seemed to bow its head and
send up u mute appeal to the clouds
for rain. And when the storm broke
and the rain fell it was an answer to
that prayer and the effect was nl
most instantly noticed as each flow
er and blade of grass and stalk of
grain or corn lifted its head and the
raindrops glistened liko diamonds us
the sun again kissed the fields of
flowers, etc.
He spoke of prayer as tho wireless
message. His text-was as follows
"The prayer of the righteous man
availeth much." As the wireless
message must be sent in a certain
strata of atmosphero, so must the
prayer be sent. A person must get
en a level with God in order to ex
pect his or her prayer to reach Qod
When a man says that prayer in
sot effectual, Dr. Oliver says: "I im
mediately begin to look down for the
little cuss that is spoakmg, and in
variably I find that the life is low
and mean, noto on a level with God-
hence tho prayers don't reach God."
Dr, Oliver preached a very forc
ible sermon in the morning, being re
plete with illustrations, which proved
that everything in this world prayed
in some form; that the prayers of
man and beast and nil nature were
answered many times by man him-
Di, QHvsr's sermon in the evening
was splendid and over 2500 people
listened in almost breathless silence
for over an hour and a quarter. The
music and singing was tho finest
ever heard in a revival in this part
of the county, say old residents. You
will enjoy attending these meetings.
Dr. Oliver promises red-hot fire
the unmasking of sin in all forms.
OLIVER'S LONG REACH.
A Sketch by Professor Chas. M. Al
exander, of the Tc-rrey & Alex
ander Evangelistic Combination.
This country knows and loves a
man. Every inch of Evangelist
French E. Oliver can truly be la
beled man. After that he is a
preacher. A great towering frame,
straight up, broad at the shoulders,
is crowned with a sure-enough head.
His face is swarthy and tremendu
ously earnest. A great mop of
straight, crow-black hair ends the
picture six feet four inches from the
ground. We cannot give you all
about the man. He is interesting
from the first. On tho street people
turn for a second look. They do it
as naturally as they breathe. His
big form is an inspiration wherever
bo is. A steady eye is a good thing
to have Oliver has two, and they
are gray. The memory mark, full
forehead over and between the eyes,
is the strongest point in bis face.
Firmness is written in his tiger jaws.
His voice is reaching and has trum
pet timbre. Pathos easily takes the
first place in Oliver's make-up. Yet
a note of victory colors all bo does
and says. His weapon is the sword
of the Spirit and he grasps it with
the hand of a master. He summons
to his command the passions of the
human heart, the sentiments that
sway tho soul, the actions and char
actcrs about him, and in vivid, or
iginal style does his work splendid
work. He drags boforo his hearers
the slimy hypocrite, tears from his
heart bis secret crimes and exposes
his accursed villainy to tho gaze of
nil. Ho is terrific at tunes. To seel
him pull up that Lincoln form and
ranse that joist-like arm full length
for a charge looks liko battle, Ol
iver is a very big man every way,
big body, big bead, big soul, big

heart, big ways. Little thoughts
grow big in his atmosphero. His
high position in revival work has
not been easily gained. Every step
of the way has been a fight, but the
fight has doveloped n well -equipped
soldier. The power back of all this
ihsis lifo of prayer and study of the
Bible. I have never seen his knees,
but belicvo an examination would
show wear. The word failure is
eliminated from his dictionary.
When towns secure him for work it
is a serious business something is
sure to happen. Thousands of souls
have been touched and won to God
through his efforts. All good men
and women who know him instinct
ively turn to him as a great leader.
He has a long reach and may God
give him many years to ubo it.
