SPETZENBERGS OR
NEWTOWN PIPPIN?
Relative Ratings of These Two Ap
ples Aro Discussed by Secretary
Williamson of the State Horticul
tural Society.
In reply to a query as to tho roln
tlvo rating of tho Newtown nnd Spit
xenberg apples tho Oregon stato
board of horticulture mado reply as
follows:
It Is true that tho American Pom
ologlcal society uses the SntUenborg
applo as tho standard of excellence,
so far ns quality Is concerned, and
rates It 10. Tho rating for quality
glvo ntho Yellow Newtown Is 9-10.
This rating was given before Oregon
Tellow Newtowns wore known out
sJdo of tho state. This rating applies
eololy to the quality of tho flesh.
H is a strong assertion to state
that any ono variety of apples ranks
all others If we take Into considera
tion. In addition to the quality of
flesh, color, form and keeping qual
lty of tho fruit, and health, vigor and
bearing habits of trees, and the dt
verse tastes of different consumers
and groups of consumers.
There Is a marked dlfferenco of
opinion among good judges as to the
comparative merits of the Spltzenberg
and Yellow Newtown In the matter
of quality of flesh. Downing, one
cf the best authorities on fruits who
fea sever lived In this country, placed
them on a par, to-wlt: "Tho Esopus
Spltzenberg is a handsome, truly de
licious apple, and is generally consid
ered by all good Judges equal to the
Newtown Pippin, and unsurpassed as
a dessert fruit by any other variety."
The most valuable recent publica
tion on apples is "Tho Apples of
Now York." In this work the quality
of the flesh of tho Newtown Is rated
"Best"; that of tho Spltzenberg "very
good to best."
In the United States tho Spitzen
bcrgs of tho fanciest grade sell for
higher prices than Newtowns of tho
corresponding grade. In England tho
Newtown Is preferred to all other ap
ples sent from this country, and the
Spltzenberg is not especially popular,
selling there at about tho same prices
as Baldwin, Northern Spy and King
apples of equal condition.
I havo at hand a report of the auc
tion sales of apples at Liverpool, De
cember 1, 1909, which may be taken
as (ally typical In tho matter of prices
obtained. On that day Hudson River
Newtowns were sold at 20 shillings
per barrel; Virginia Newtowns at
from 14 to 33 shillings per barrel;
California Newtowns at 18 shillings
per barrel, and G to 8 shillings, six
pence per box, and Oregon Newtowns
at from 9 shill'ngs threepence to 12
shillings sixpence per box. On the
samo day Sp'lzenbcrgs from New
England and Canada were sold at
from 13 to 15 shillings per barrel,
practically tho same prices that were
obtained for Baldwins, Spies and
Greenings from tho same districts on
that day.
