Annua! Election of Officers of Rogue
River Horticultural Society Held
Saturday C. M. Potter Elected
President.
Tho nnnuul meeting of the Rogue
River Horticultural society wns held
Saturday afternoon, at which time
officers for the ensuing year were
elected.
C. M. Potter was elected presi
dent; J. A. Westerlund, vice-president;
H. H. Tuttle, secretary; J. A.
Perry, treasurer.
Tho following executive- committee
was elected: Q. A. Hover, chairman;
A. C. Allen, P. E. Merrick, C .E.
Whislcr, A. J. Dunlap.
Professor O'Gara made a short
talk on timely spraying. Ho recom
mended that spraying for green
aphis should commence soon, and
promised to publish in the Mail Trib
une instructions as to best and most
timely methods.
In the matter of frost protection,
the question of tho relative cost and
value of erode oil and distillate was
discussed at some length, but no
definite conclusion was reached. It
was finally agreed to leave tho mat
ter open.
Crude oil last season proved un
satisfastory. Distillate has not been
used to much extent as yet, and tho
most successful of the orchardists
in the line of avoiding frosts used a
smudge rather than a flame.

Kittens Management of Portland
Park Acquires Them.
George N. Lewis of Jacksonville
has boon advertising a pair of pan
ther kittens for salo in the columns
of tho Mail Tribuno for several
weeks, and he has sold them, indi
rectly through the advertisement, ns
it led to inquiry on tho part of the
malingers of tho Portland park, nud
a little missionary work helped on
the sale. The kittens voro shipped
to Portland a fow. days ago and
are now comfortably domiciled in
their new home.
Those kittens are not tho kind that
you would tako up in your lap aud
stroke. On the contrary, they weigh
about 40 pouuds apiece and hav
claws that one wouldn't like to have
make experiments with his opider
mis. But they were a beautiful pair
of cats and if they mature will be
one of the sights of the park.

the philanthropic organization.
i The committee invited Starr J.

' Rockefellers' chief aides in his dis-
( tribntion of money for philanthropic
purposes, to appear before the com-

HOOUIAM. Wash., March 5.
With scoros of Indians armed and
prepared for an inter-racial feud, as
well as a three-sided conflict with
federal and state officers, no defi
nite word has come out from Ta
hola. the little Indian hamlet where
Fred Pope shot and killed Adam
Hawk and Hob William Monday.
United States Deputy Marshal Stnt-
ter has secured the aid of two other
deputies and is still at the scene of
the crimes.
Statter's absence lends strength to
the opinion that tho conditions
among the Indians are moro serious
than at first thought. Rumors are
rife that Pope will never bo taken
alive and that ho means to sell his
life as dearly as possible The Iu
dian is hiding in the woods and food
and clothing are being supplied by
friends and relatives.
Never before have the Indians
been so worked up over any affair.
Even the women are said to bo filled
with the thirst for blood.
"It's off ng'in, on nc'in, g one
ng'in" with the. trainmen of tho
Shasta division nowadays, owing lo
tho tioup of tho Central Pacific oast
front Sacramento.
Freights are stalled - for want of
crews, while the freight crews, oft
times without an opportunity to
change from the overalls and jumper
which constitutes their usual uni
form ns freight handlers, aro com
pelled to take out n train of Pull
mans ruled with tho bon-ton.
"Tho togs don't out no ico with
me," growled nn oxtrn brnkie, ns'his
train was waiting nt the Mcdford
station for anothor to pass, "but I
would like to know when I'm going
to get a chance to sleep."

cording to an announcement today

stitute. Tho steel king now is in
Santa Barbara, ne expects shortly

cisco.

OF A LIFETIME
WASHINGTON, D. C, March 6. i
Tho statehood measure or Now
Mexico and Arirona is stuck on an
other sung today. This time tho sou
nto committeo on territories is wor
rying over tho question of whether
suffrage iu tho proposed states shall I
bo limited to those who spank nud
write the English language.
According to tho majority of wit- i
ucsscs who havo been examined liv
the committeo, it is practically cer
tain both states would bo Democratic
should such a limitation bo mndo. !
It is thoroforo probable that no
statehood legislation will pans during
tho present congressional session
unless somo provision to prevent dis
franchisement of many voters in tho
two states is doviscd.
Senators nrguo that if tho An-,
zona election law would bo allowed '
to stand one party would bo able to
gain control of tho cloetion mnohiu-'
ery nud forever joopnrdue the
chances of nnother party by dis-j
franchising its voting members.
One reason why tho most dosir
ablo housos, apartments and rooms
are always advortisod is that tho
most dcsirablo tonants never tnke the
trouble to hunt up placos that aro
not advertised.
