Murphy to New York.
SAN FRANCISCO, March 3.
Toniy Murphy and his mnangor
Johnny Oliver, are scheduled to start
for New York Into this afternoon.
This puts tho ehnnces for an imme
diate return match with Owen Moran
in the thousand to tone class.
As a result Jimmy Griffith of the
Broadway Club is attempting today
to pet Moran and Tommy McCarthy,
a local lijrhtwcighr, to hook up for a
twenty-round bout in April.
How Griffin will fare is another
question. Moran has said nothing as
to whnt he might do in this particu
lar case. Ho has a number" of op
portunities open to him. He can
fight over the ten round routo with
Matty Baldwin in Kansas City or he
can fight the came distanco in Los
Angeles for Tom McCarey.
DREAM SAVED MAN
FROM DEATH IN SLIDE
Engineer Awoke 15 Minutes Before
Big Slide Came and Sense of Dan
ger Caused Him to Move.
SCENIC HOT SPRINGS, Wash.,
March 3. Awakened 15 minutes be
fore the great Wellington slide, warn
ed by a dream and literally forced to
dress and walk to a bunk bouse, just
in time to escape being hurled to
death with the others, is tho story
Charles Andrews, an engineer, whose
borne is at Leavenworth, tells today.
Andrews says be was awakened
from a sound sleep at 1 o'clock In
the morning. He-lay still a few min
utes unable to go back to sleep. The
mental impression of Impending dis
aster was so strong he finally walked
to the bunkhouse where tho other
men were sleeping and sat down on
the steps alone.
A few minutes later thero was .
rumble, then a roar, then the earth
shook and tho flying particles of snow1
cut off his view. When It settled,
where the trains had been but a few
moments before, nothing remained.
WORLD-WIDE MONEY
TROUBLES EXPECTED
Disorganization of Money Markets of
the World Expected Owing to Non
Passage of English Budget.
LONDON, March 3. A world-wide
disorganization of the money market
Is believed to be Inevitable by finan
ciers here today as a result of the
evident impossibility ot passing the
governmental budget before the end
of the current fiscal year.
This will compel thousands who
had money invested to withdraw
it because of tho lack of government
funds. Among these are many who
bad held back their taxes in the hope
ot escaping final payment. These In
vented their tax money and tho fail
ure of the budget to pobs will compel
thom to removo their money from in
vestments. Tho money actually belonging 'to
the government and Invested tempo
rarily In this way amounts to many
millions and Its suddeu removal will
have a depressing effect throughout
the world.
A discussion In tho commons show
ed conclusively that It will bo Impos
sible to pass the budget before the
end of the fiscal year.
It Is estimated that the arrears ot
taxes resulting from failure to pass
the budget will exceed a hundred mil
lions by tho end of March and that a
torge part of this sum will bo perma
etly lot to the government,
TELLS HORRORS OF
GREAT AVALANCHE
.
One of tho Rescuing Party at
lington Tells of Great Slide and
Its Horrors Many People Were
Burled Alive.
SEATTLE, Wash., March 3. This
is the story Vaughan Ellis, first ot
the rescuers at Wellington to roach
Seattle, tells today.
"Away up In tho summit ot the
Cascades mountains today there is
spread ou tho evidence of the most
horrible cainhtrcpho over recorded In
tho histojy ct the northwest.
"I was one ot four that formed tho
t'rst res-ate party out of Seattle. P!r
turo a ten-acre tract of Umber sud
denly swept clear ot Its majestic trees
with only the green branches and an
occasional protruding stub.
Thero Is no sign of a wreck, that
is, no piled up cars or overturned en
gines. All you can seo Is snow
just plain snow with scattered
stumps and branches of trees And
away down beneath this mass, 40 to
50 feet below, Is tho splintered de
bris of two trains, three engines, four
motor cars and a superintendent's
car.
"Wo all risked our lives at Scenic
to get to Wellington to sec tho wreck,
out ot curiosity more than anything
else, and when wo reached there ex
hausted were sadly disappointed, for
there was nothing to seo but snow.
"Tho slide struck the train at 1:43
a. m. Tuesday. The watch belong
ing to an anglncer was found dented
and stopped at that time. Some tell
ot the awful roar of the avalancho.
but no one was awakened at the hotel
at Wellington. Alfred B. Hensel, a
mall clerk, was thrown through a
window of his car and hurled far
ahead of the wreck. In his night
robes he struggled back up the can
yon and woke tho sleeping people In
the hotel. Immediately came the
cry 'everybody out'
"Then Indeed was everybody out.
A hundred and fifty men rushed to
their shovels and flew to the rescue.
"Occasionally you would hear a
groan underneath the snow and then
the shovels fairly flew to the rescue.
It was not always a living person
that the sturdy arms passed out.
Many times It was not a whole body.
More 'often Just a leg or arm or even
a hand. Out of tho first pile of splin
ters and snow came four bodies, un
identified. Strange to say, the next
four out of the same pile were very
much alivo and proceeded to walk to
Scenic Immediately."

EDGEWOOD, Cal., March 3. Mrs.
Sam Jackson and Mrs. James Edward

tho eating of deviled ham served in
sandwiches at a Sunday school social

About a dozen other people woro af

the two named and they are now out

- All of the cases developed during
the night Immediately following tho
social and was finally diagnosed as

deviled ham used In the sandwiches
