PLANS FOR THE CRATER LAKE HIGHWAY.
-! The Medford Commercial club will assume charge of
the collection of funds for building the Crater Lake high
way, and its special committee fill the place that would
have been filled by he state commission, had the state's
appropriation been available.
The highway will be constructed with the funds jointly
contributed by the public and by the county, under diree
tion of the Road Building Section of the national depart
ment of Agriculture.
THE STATE OF SISKIYOU.
(Oregon Journal.)
Tho voice of Jackson comity is for
war. Tho loss of an appropriation
for the Ashlaml normal is followed
by tho supreme court decision that ,
defeats the Crater Lake road pro- j
jeet. Jackson thinks it is discrim-'
state, and not without some color of
reason. Tho news from there is that
there is a more thunderous demand
than ever for n divorce from tho old !
commonwealth of Oregon and a
marriage into the new state of Sis
kiyou with northern California. The
convention with that end in view is
to be held in Yrekn. March IS. and
the Jncksouiaus arc in fit mood for
the separation.
They are, however, too excellent
a peoplo for Oregon to willingly re
linquish. Jackson was one of tho

"WHITE YOUR FORMER CONGRESSMAN.
It is improbable that such a sep
aration will come. If it docs, tho
usual order iu stato life will be re

contains provisions that are a guar

of states. No division can be made
without consent of the state aud of
congress. In Oregon, the probable
method of obtaining consent would
be by referendum, and no vote on
the subject would ever be favorable.

No nobler figure ever stood in (he forefront of n
nation's life. Washington was grave and courteous,
in address. His manners were simple and unpretend
