Ono summer tho entire family were
nway for two mouths, hud Mr. Wnr
run gave Cindy a real vacation by
paying' tier full wanes for that Jlmo
' and giving her the keys to the well
stocked storeroom. '
A fow days after tho return of tho
family Cindy came bristling Into Mrs.
Warren's silting room.
"I wants mo' wages." she announced.
"Why, Cindy," exclaimed tho sur
prised 'mistress, "you are gutting bet
ter pay tliiin any cook I know of In a
family the slzo of ours. Von have a
nice, comfortable room and good treat
niont. Think how kind It was of Mr.
Warren to give you a long vacatton
with your full wages,"
"Dat'H It," grumbled Cindy. "Mr.

"The Wolf," a play by Kugcn-J
Walter, Is something of an original
creation, with an atmosphoro of the
uorthlaiid with its forests, silent and
majestic, its autumn tints of sciir
lei, gold mid brown, and its hiiowh nf
winter that orealc beneath tho tread
of tho lonely habitant. Tho plot til
tho play is ono of intensity and con
sistent with tlio people that Inhabit
tho frontiers in tho region of Hud
eon Day.
As to tho players, they seemed to
ho, in most cases, unfitted for their
parts, with tho'possiblo exception of
Henry Sherwood. .Mr. llobeson wo
havo seen in other parts, and he
made a handsome and dashing Itich
ard Carvel, but Air. Itobesou is not
a character actor. Ho has been a
matinee idol too long to drop that
graco of manner calculated to nppoal
to tho heart of tho eaters of bon
bons. Mr. Itobesou should tako Into
account that the character ha por
trays is the Canadian-Frenchman, n
distinct typo. His make-up would
havo been more suitnblo for a well-to-do
vendor of bananas on Droad
way than a voyagor of the north.
Tho Scotchman overdoes his part,
reaches his climax while tho first
act is yet very new. It's a pity be
didn't seo old man Stoddard play
tho "Honnio Drier Hush" nnd let the
lcftHnn sink deep into his heart.
HenVy Mnitlaud did the part of the
engineer very well. Of course, it i
hard to judge one character in u .
cast when tho balance of the com
pany are neutralizing every jMiint !
that is made hy inconsistent acting, j
Lynuo Ovesman, as (Icorgo Hunt-1

dooMi't belong in the piece, and it
was certainly a great mistake of the
author to introduce a light comedy
part that has been worn threadbare
and ought to be set away in tho gar
rot with Little Hoy Itluo's tin sol
dier. Of course there should Luj
some comedy to lighten tho somber j
huo of tho plot, but it should be;
chnracter comedy.
Miss limn Johnson, ns Hilda Me-i
Tnvish, was not suited to the part,
either by look or action. We do not j
wish to seem hnrsh or over-critical,'
and manv actors and actresse that,
aro 'good in certain parts aro fail-j
uros in othors. This play of "Thci
Wolf" deals with peculiar ehnrac-l
tors, and to portray them to the sat-'
isfnetinn of thoFo who are familiar
with tho life of Northern Canada re
quires n closo study, n careful make- i
up and a company of players who i
aro suited to eccentric character!
acting.
The play as a whole, however, ;
pleased tho majority of tho people, i
The scenery was beautiful nnd Hip
plot fascinating, It would bo worth '
one's while to see this play nfter It
had been in the hands nf David He
lasco, allowing him to change it in
places and pick tho cast for its pro
duction, but being not worse stands
in some rnuk of plays.
