How He Puld Hie Fine,
t Kelly, (he owner of the only
Juuiillng car In the vlllnge, went on a
spree and was sentenced to a line of
20 shillings or no vim (lays Lit Jnll. Kel
ly chose the hitler.
Now, the prison was ten miles away,
and tho only possible means of gettlni;
a prisoner there was by driving. As
Kelly himself bad the only car In the :
place, there was nothing to do hut to
hire it. Kor some time the constable '
nnd his prisoner haggled over the
terms.
Kelly stuck out firmly for .'SO shil
lings, to be paid In advance, nnd nt
Inst the constable had to consent to
tho extortion. Accordingly they drove
off nud without any misadventures ar
rived at the prison. When they had
alighted Kelly suddenly informed his
companion that he bad changed his
mind, as the prison wasn't n decent
looking plnce, nud would pay tho One.
He thereupon drew out the .'10 still
lings he had received, counted out the
'JO shillings and paid them over to tho
Inspector. Then, Jumping on his cur,

A Home In Pornpetl.
In tho exhumation of I'oinpcll one
house wns discovered which was evi
dently being repaired when tbo vol
canic storm that overwhelmed tbo city
hurled it to the ground. I'nlutcrs, dec
orators nnd cleaners must hnvc been
busy nt the very moment of the catas
trophe. Pnlntcrs' tiots nnd brushes
and workmen's tools were scattered
nil over tho house. Telltale spots of
whitewash starred wnlt nnd Uoor.
Such domestic Implements ns pots and
kettles had been bundled up In a cor
ner nil by themselves. There was n
bronze dish In waitlug before the oven
nnd on the dish u sucking pig ready to
bo baked. Ilut the oven was already
engaged with Its full complement of
bread. Bo the pig bnd to wait It,
however, never entered the oveu after
nil. nud the loaves were npt taken
out. They had remained where placed
to bnkc, it Is calculated, closo upon
2,000 years. There were twenty-Uireo
of them, rather crusty, of course, aud
somewhat dnrlt colorod, but otherwise
perfectly preserved.

Whitefield on Love and Marriage.
George Whltcllcld, the most persua
sive preacher Kughuid has produced,
who died on .Sept. 1SQ, 1770. could np
pent so powerfully to the emotions
that he onco ciithn.-d all the money
from the pocket of the prudent Krank
tin. Yet he strangely anticipated some
modern uuromaiitic views on the sub
ject of nmrrliige. Iu 1710 he applied to
tiro parents of a youug lady for the"
bund of their daughter, adding, "If I
know anything of my own heart I am
free from that foolish passion which
tho world calls love."
When this prosaic proKsal was de
clined the undaunted Whltetleld mar
ried an elderly Welsh widow "neither
rich nor beautiful." This "merry wid
ow" did not make a congenial help

refreshing candor, that "her death set
