THE CHARTER AMENDMENTS.
Important charter amendments nre to be voted upon nt Tuesday's elec
tion. In another column uppears a letter from Mayor Canon fully explain
ing them.
Tho first amendment provides for a city court, of which tho mayor is
to preside as judge, relieving the recorder of this work. In case n mayor
is elected not qualified to net, tho council may appoint a polico judge, de
ducting his salary from tho mayor's.
Tho second amendment provides u salary of $75 a month for tho mayor
nnd $25 a month for councilmen. Tho business of tho city has grown' so
that officials must devote a lurge part of their time to the workand
thoy should no longer bo asked to give their time. Tho salary for tho
mayor, who must also act as polico judge, and givo practically his entire
time to the office, ought to be larger than tho amendment calls for.
Tho third amendment will enable tho council to secure interest on city
fundB while deposited in banks, taking it out of tho hands of the troasuror,
who usunlly places it with tho bank furnishing his large bond.
The fourth and Inst amendment Btrnightens out tho methods of levying
nssosmonts for public improvements, which nro somewhat hnzily defined
in tho charter. It enables tho council to levy a less amount than tho full
cost whero the benefit is general rather than special and cuts tho advertis
ing down from three insertions to ono.
All should bo passed.
r GOOD CITIZENSHIP.

tho present council in order to lot them finih tho publio improvement work
bo well begun.
It is not every citizen broad enough to smother his personal ambitions
for tho publio good, but thnt Medford has many such is shown by tho fact
that no less thnn three councilmnnio candidates withdrew when they thor-

Tho best authorities on road build
