Commenting editorially, however,
you say my letter "does not explain

Medford meeting In 1907, to which
tho officers did not even send regrets,
though preparations had teen mado
for their entertainment." Permit mo
to say that the Information on which
your comment Is based Is entirely er

presidents was present, as was also
Secretary Lake, tho latter having
made a "forced march" from tho Cas

How can the State Horticultural

Rogue River valley fruit growers!
How can tho well known energy
and Intelligence of your thriving hor

foremost place as a fruit-growing
state, and mnkj our annual meeting
and display a truly stato event? An
event which shall bring out the best
efforts of all Oregon fruit growers;
an event which shall attract buyers
and visitors from eastern states, and
be a matter of pride to all cltlteno of
Oregon?
Do you agre0 with mo that the ob

"Acording to n dispatch from Mt.

case in tho circuit court court in that
city, by paying to tho Votaw Lumber

Daniel was formerly a partner in the
concern which operates extensively
in southern Indiana nnd Illinois, nnd
it is stated that some time ago ho

Jam breaks on ns we want to bo ready,
and If it don't break before you get
this swing strengthened maybe we can
hold her wbero she Is. There's no
earthly doubt that thoso boom plies
will never stand up when they get the
full pressurp of tho freshet"
The driver's crew labored desperate
ly, hoisting the piles Into the carriage
tripping tbo heavy hammer, binding
feverishly the clumps of piles together
by means of cables.
Two of the clamps bad beea placed
and bo nnd when suddenly, with a roar,
the upper booms gave way, projecting
their logs upon the opening and tho
driver.
The half dozen members of the crew
were scattered by the winds of a panic.
Two or three flung themselves on their
faces; one leaped into tho river. Immi
nent destruction seemed upon them.
Tom North, at the winch that open
ated the arm of the swing, however,
retained bis presence of mind. At the
first sag outward of the boom piles be
set In operation the machinery thnt
twecn his teeth, stood culm, the lever
of his winch In his hand. A short
three feet from the snot ou which he
stood tho first saw log of tho many

thrust forward Its uply head. The
wash of the water lifted the huge pile
driver bodily and deposited it with n
crash half on the bank and half In the
water.
Instantly after the first break Orde
had commenced running out over the
booms from the shore.
"Good boy, TomP be shot nt North.

the pile driver Iny. Captain Asptnwall

"Thnt wns lucky," said Orde briefly.

"I I don't think so." replied the cap

"That's good. I'll send over tho tug

work cut out for us now."
"You don't expect me to work my
driver under the face of that Jnmr
cried the captain.
"What's the matter?" asked Orde.
"It Isn't safe." replied the captain,
"and I don't Intend to risk my mcr
or my driver."
Ordo. with a snort of anger, seized
the man and thrust' him bodily over
the side to the bank.
"Safe, you white Uvcred skunk!" he
roared. "Safe! Go over In the middle

Asptnwall picked himself up.
"Get off my driver!" he snarled.
"This driver Is requisltlonc-dr cried
Orde. "Get out! I've got to save my

Tom North and some others of tho
crew came running across the Jam.
