PART OF PLOT
Dillon Wallace Comes to Aid
of Explorer and Asserts
Dunkle and Loose Are
Mere Blackmailers.
SAYS PLOT FOEMED
TO DISCREDIT COOK
Maintains That He Knew
Dunkle of Old and That It's
a Scheme Against Cook.
NEW YORK, Dec. 10. Dillon
Wallace, the Labrador explorer, wbo
organized an expedition a year ago
for the purpose of searching for Dr.
Fred Cook, If he had not returned
before last summer, today came
strongly to the defense of the Brook
lyn explorer, and declared that the
affidavits made by George II. Dun
kle and Captain Loose are a part of
a plot to discredit Dr. Cook.
"Dunkle came to me and tried to
get mo to Introduce him to Dr. Cook,"
said Wallace today. "I refused. I had
no confidence in him or any suspic
ions that ho might have. He called
on mo last March when I was organ
izing the relief expedition and told
rae that he was one of tho best pro
moters -alive.
In s Promoter.
VHo declared that he could raise
any amount we wanted If wo would
give him one-half of the money he
collected. I believe that he entered
this deal at the suggestions of others
and that it was part of a plan to dls
credit the first man who reached tho
pole."
Wallace Insists that Dr. Cook
reached the north pole.
Ho alleged that before Peary start
ed on his last trip to the Arctic re
gions ho left behind him, "with a
group of men who for many years
have gleaned recognition through as
sociation with him," a letter design
ed to made public If Cook should re
turn while Peary was away and claim
that he discovered the pole. Wallace
said this lottor was designed to an
nounco that Cook's claim was a "gold
brick."
Would Help Cook.
Wallaco asserted that tho letter
was about to bo mado public when
Cook was first heard from, but final
ly it was decided that it would help
rather than retard recognition of Dr.
Cook's claims.
Wallace alleged that n plot now
exists to send an exploring expedi
tion to tho top of McKlnlay this win
tor to "destroy tho records left at
tho summit by Dr. Cook."
Calling attention to the fact that
Dr. Cook had boen on eight soparato
Arcttc and Antarctic expeditions,
Wallaco stated ho was "scientifically"
qualified to mako records showing
truly whoro ho had been.
Wallace declares that Cook's des
cription of tho tco about the polo
was dlfferont from that over seon by
any othor mnn previously and that i
... . i...
11113 description wan i-miuh iiicu
Commander Peary's own story. For
this reason Wallaco says Cook must
hnvo gone to tho pole, as "no man
could hnvo guessed so accurately."

(By Wireless to Colon.) Strong

that the nd of the struggl is only

Following their decisive victory
near Rama last Tuesday, when Gen

leaving 200 dead on tho field and
abandoning his cannon and a large
supply of ammunition, tho rebels re

of which has been strung a network
