S
first Ceremony of Its Kind in Med-

1 Under the Auspices,, of
1 Lodge 1168.
On next Sunday afternoon, Decem
ber 5, Medford Lodge, No. 1168, B.
P. 0. Elks, will hold its first me
morial service in this city. The ser
vices will be held in tho Medford op
era house and will bo under the
auspices of the local lodge.
These services are held by every
lodge of Elks throughout the United
States, once each year, on the first
Sunday in December. The day is set
apart by tho grand lodge as the day
upon which eulogy is pronounced of
the members of the herd who, during
the past year have answered to the
last call. The exercises are impres
sive and Hie general public is invited
to attend them.
Upon this day the motto of the or
der: "The faults of our brothers wo
write upon the sands; their virtues
upon the tablets of love and mem
ory," is taken by the lodge, in public
session, as the theme for the solemn
ceremonies.
The program will consist of the
opening and closing of a "Lodge of
Sorrow," vocal solos by Mrs. Charle3
D. Hazelrigg and Mr. William F.
Isaacs, the rending of "Thanatopsis"
by Ed L. Andrews, quartets by
Messrs. Burgess Isaacs, Andrews
and Colvig, and addresses by Charles
V. Galloway of McMinnville.
The opera house will be appropr
atcly decorated in the colors of the
order, and with song prayer and eu
logy the absent ones will be revent
ly remembered. Since the organiza
tion of the local lodge there have
been no deaths among its local mem
bership, but in every other lodge of
Elks in the United States some chair
will be draped in mourning and eulo
gy will be" pronounced for some broth
er who but a few short days before
was in tife and health. It is in mem
ory .of. these and in tribute to them
that these services are held by the
members of this great fraternity.

COUNTY DEBT
!!80
Increase of Nearly $100,000 Made In
YearSpent on Improve
ment of High
ways. Jackson county owes $107,030.7"
in outstanding warrants, an increase
of a little over $80,000 of tho war
rant indebtedness of a year ago.
For a county of the wealth and re
sources of Jackson county, this sum
is small, indeed. To counterbalance
the increase the county has assets in
the way of new bridges, new roads
and other improvements which cott
money, but can always bo regarded
as permanent assets for the commu
nity. Tho county has expended betwiun
$13,000 and $14,000 in a bridge
across Rogue River at Woodville, the
expenditure will more than repay it
self in the increaso of value of tho
property owned by tho citizens, for
whoso convenience tho bridge was
built, and tho increaso of population
brought about by the added easo pro
vided by the bridgo for getting tho
products of the farms to market.
The county has also expended
$15,000 iu securing a present own
ership book, modeled on tho best of
modern lines in this respect, and that
is also a permanent asset.
Tho county has now a modern
poor farm, practically self-sustaining,
several gotod stretches of road
and more coming, and altogether the
expenditure either is or will bring
good results.
