W hite Salm on r iv e r at Underwood. A
V-shaped w eir has been constructed at
the mouth o f the stream and the trig
fish, en route to spaw ning grounds,
have been caught here by the hun
dreds. The eggs o f the fem ales are
taken as the fish are caug ht, arid in
large cans are im m e d iiate ly conveyed
to the h a tch e ry. A U rg e portion of
the fish are skinned and salted down to
fu rn ish food for the f r y . O thers, taken
by the scores o f Ind ians encamped in
the neighborhood, are smoked and
dried in the autum n sunshine to fu rn ish
a w in te r food su pply.
Fuitire Ind ian households, w ith pa
pooses, dogs and ponies, have journeyed
down from rese rvatio n s o f the d is tric t.
Salm on heads are considered a g reat
delicacy among the Kerim en, and hun
dreds of the heads, strung on cross
pieces o f wood nailed to posts, may he
seen along the r iv e r fro n t. The stench
of the decaying o ffal can be sm elled fo r
se veral hundred feet, and hordes of
Hies cover the d ryin g fish.
