Portland.— Lumber mills on the Co

just beeu invited to bid on 200,000,000

Contracts for all this material have

Rioters, who for hours had held the
city in a reign of terror, looting stores
and the postoffice and setting fire to

Citizens, however,
feared a new outbreak at daybreak.
The trouble was the culmination of
a strike o f laborers which began at the

plants of the tube company,

and the Brier H ill Steel company, all

The bridge from East Youngstown
to Struthers was burned to prevent
rioters from entering the town. Tw o
companies o f United States regulars
from Columbus were ordered to East
Youngstown because of the looting and
burning o f the postoffice.
The trouble started early in the
morning when strike sympathizers and
workers at the sheet and tube plant
clashed. Stones were thrown and sev

injured.
Later in the afternoon a
riot occurred just outside the tube

Wide Awake.
An abnormally fat man lumbered In
to a Pullman on a west-bound train,
and set up a loud protest when he
found that hla berth was at the end of
the oar.
" I can’t sleep a wink If I ’m over
the car wheels.
I won’t close my
eyes If you put me over the car
wheels, porter.’
"Can’t help It, sah,” said the por
ter. It ’s the one that was sold you,
and lt’a the only one there la. You’ll
have to take a chair car and set up It
you don’t take this.’
The fat man Anally decided to keep
the berth, protesting to the last that
he did not expect to close hts eyes.
Shortly hla snores were heard above
the rumble of the train, but It was not
until the train had a long wait that the
sounds issuing from the berth caused
anything but amusement. In the si
lence, however, they got on the pas
sengers’ nerves, and by request the
porter prodded him In the ribs.
"M y goodness, sah!” demanded the
porter. " I f you makes noises like that

car wheels, what would you do if you
was sound asleep In the middle o f the
