Think It Over!
The weekly lie irspafieT prtirrrfte* Ihe ¡iirturest* o f the town
in which it is published to such an extent that it becomes im
possible to place3.T tKflin-tCe upon its worth. Thute if no
enterprise that does so much for the corporation or the individ
ual citizen as the paper. It etamb ojiinutudiit> the town knock
er, the town ¿jcUer, the town fanatic and the town drones.
It stands for action as against dry rot. It stands for progress
as against stagnation. It is ever ready tocom bafthe schemer
o f visionaries and as ready to aid the com-structive plans o f
the wise and level-headed citizears. It is fortdie upholding of
the community. The paper lias not yet come into its own,
however, because it is never appreciated to the extent o f its
wattb by theltraople at large. Y et v*.h«r b a il'* are to be
fought for town or county a rush is made to the newspaper
office always to find the loyal editor ready, frequently without
hope o f reward. S a n j other enterprise* are eitaauruged by a
bonus, but rarely is the newspaper offered any such help and
still more often not given the help it ie entitled to. Commun
ities frequently lose sight o f their real benefiiotor when they
fail toe-eoegnize the arecKly journal as such. The editor and
his paper stand as the bulwarks o f defense against the at tacks
o f «evil or designing schemes affecting the goof o f the individ
ual or the town. For these and other reaeons the newspaper
o f the town and county should receive the support o f the
public at large in a very Fbera* deffree, for it is really the
most important business enterprise o f the community.
•
SThr-s arSftfe is not original with us, but it expresses our
sentiments exactly, and some o f our readers will admit the
truth o f the statements it contains as regards local conditions
—others o f them know it as the truth, tho they wou'H not
admit it. Nevertheless it is food for thought for those who
are continually finding fault with their home paper, and who
think the paper “ doesn’t do the town aay good.; that we don’t
