6300 WORK ON BOAT LANDING
At p e r previous agreement, a
giNulty crowd of citizens from
the town and country gathered
ttisl Monday morning, with* took
and teams, ami went lQ’ work
with a will on« the Mosier boat
landing. There’ were 25 workers
iii the morning and the labor was
divided, the carpenters putting
hi tiiefr time building- the ware
house on the wharfhoat and the
rest of the crowd working dili
gently with plows, scrapers and
stone boats making a road of
nocks from low water to the
railroad crossing.
Everyone was in good humor
and high spirts and the work,
progressed' merrily undetr the
general supervision o f S. D.
Fisher, who has had years of ex
perience steamboating on the
Columbia River and knows its
channels ami peculiarities. The
road a« laid out will be 40 feet
wide at the*lower end, allowing
teams sufficient room to turn
around. It will require a great
deal o f work yet, to finish it, as
the work done Monday was only
a starter; but it was a mighty
good start and showed what the
people can do when they all work
together.
By evening the boat house was
well under way and on Wednes
day (Tuesday being stormy V a
Hiwnlier o f carpenters went back
and finished the work as far as
the lumber went.. It was found
that some of the lumber had been
stolen by unknown parties and
this will lmve to be replaced be
fore it will be safe to«leave any
thing over night on» the boat.
Nearly every man ‘"on the
jbb” ' Monday donated bis time,
there being only three or four
who had been hired to “ sub” for
those w h o couldn’t be present.
W e have it on good authority
that a prominent real estate man
•f the town was on hand bright;
and early about ten o ’clock, and
worked a> whole- hour,, setting a
pace fo r the others. It is said
that he even “ shucked'” his over
coat in order to- work faster.
Tack thought the work most too
etremious and “ ylimped his yob” '
early, but he kept a good man- on
all day. In the afternoon there
were 35 men at worlt and the
way they tore- into things one
would think they had a contract
to buihl the Panama canal in a
day.
There were a-number of visit-*
ers to-l-he-scene o f action, among
them being Mr. Stone, superin
tendent of the rock crusher,, who*
kindly offered'to furnish a man
for the carpenter work, and aleo
offered the gravel for top-dress-
ing the road, when required.
It was noticeable that many of
the men- and teams were from
the country, proving tha-t. the
effort to secure a good boat land
ing is of as much importance to
them m to the town people. To
farther prove this, they urge
that another day be devoted to
work on the road, and that ev
ery individual in the town and
country who can possibly spare
the time sbeoM turn ouA with hi»
team or tools, or both, and help
along a much needed public util
ity which, wherr finished, will be
of great benefit to everyone, and
especially the farmers, who pay
heavy freight every year on their
imports and exports, by rail.
