CURRENT WEEK
Second Week in March
Resume of World’s Important
Events Told in Brief.
Port Au Prince, Haiti.—The presi
dent of Haiti, Michel Oreste, fled from
the capital Thursday and took refuge
aboard the German cruiser Viñeta, ac
companied by his wife.
Fighting began in the city at 1
o'clock In the afternoon. An hour
later the president left the palace un
der escort and was conveyed in a
launch to the warship lying in the har
bor. Almost Immediately detachm ents
of bluejackets were landed from the
United States urmored cruiser Mon
tana and the Viñeta.
Firing continued throughout the af
ternoon and it was evident that the
revolutionary movement, which began
in the north and spread to some of
the southern towns, has gained suffi
cient strength in the capital to threat
en not only the power, but the life of
President Oreste.
The new congress, which met in ex
traordinary session, failed to take ade
quate measures to check the revolu
tion. It had been conceded for a long
time, however, the position of the ex
ecutive was weak. Opposed to him
were Senator Davilmar Theodore, in
command of the rebel troops a t Cape
Haltten, and General Bellard, both of
whom have a strong following.
It was the intention of Oreste to ab
dicate several dnys ago. but later he
declined to do so, hoping with the aid
of congress to prevent the overthrow
of his administration.
The arrival of the Montana and Viñ
eta has relieved the situation here so
far as foreign residents are concern
ed. The legations are now under
guard.
Salem —Believing alfalfa-grow ing of
so much importance, not only to the
livestock interests of the country, but
also in its relation to the maintenance
and upbuilding of soil fertility, the
entire second week of March has been
designated by State Superintendent of
Public Instruction Churchill as “ al
falfa w eek.” Every school in Oregon,
including the one-room country
schools, the grades and high schools of
the cities, will be asked to observe the
week through placing special emphasis
on the language work on the subject
of alfalfa-growing.
Bulletins of the Oregon Agricultural
college and of the Holden improve
ment committee, which give valuable
information about the growing of al
falfa will be distributed among the
schools. In the lower grades this
work will take the form of story-
telling on the part of the teachers and
oral reproduction by the pupils. In
the upper grades all the w ritten com
position work of the week will be on
the subject of alfalfa and will be
based upon inform ation gathered from
bulletins, magazines, agricultural
journals and observation on the part
of the pupils. In these grades the
Holden seed-corn tester will also be :
placed in the hands of the pupils, and
the results of their corn-testing will
be embodied in w ritten reports, which
will be accepted by the teachers in
lieu of other composition work during
th at week.

“They have framed a race with a

“All right, I’ll run.”
Mr. Glass's face abruptly fell Into
solemn lines. “Quit your kiddln',

the phonograph?”
Glass smiled wearily. "I can’t hear

“When I was accused of being an
athlete I couldn't deny It, could I?”
“I Bee. You was strlngin’ the gal,
