STRIKING MINERS IN FIGHT

Battles With Guards
Waged for Hours.
Berw ind, Colo.—T hree battles, the
h o tte st fought since the strik e o f coal
m iners in Southern Colorado began,
m arked the first day of m artial law in
tb is d istric t. One mine guard killed,
four union men wounded, two b ad ly ;
two children of non-union pien shot;
one m ine guard m issing and a county
m arshal wounded w ere casualties of
th e th ree fights, one here, one a t T a­
basco and the o th er a t H astings.
The m ost serious fighting took place
in H astings, and it was th ere th a t the
mine guard w as killed and the strik e rs
were wounded. The m ine cam p had
been hemmed in on two sides by the
strik e rs, who climbed the steep hills
of e ith e r side of th e canyon in the
n ig h t and a t d ay lig h t began shooting
into th e camp. M iners had been no­
tified th a t M arshal Robinson w ith dep­
j u ties w as on his way into the mine
