London—Three hundred million dol

en by Augustine Birrell, chief secre
tary for Ireland, o f the sum necessary
to complete the operation o f land pur
chase in Ireland in accordance with
the provisions o f the land purchase
acts o f 1903 and 1909.
These acts
make it compulsory for a landlord to
permit his tenant to purchase the land
he cultivates.
Of the $300,000,000 Mr. Birrell said
it would be necessary to borrow only
$120,000,000 through the public issue
o f land stock. The rest will be finan
ced by the National debt commission
ers under a new bill, which will give
compulsory powers to the government
to make the vendors receive half the

APPLE
GROWERS
ORGANIZE
Will Establish Agencies in All
I.arge Business Centers.
Spokane, Wash.—Out o f a confer
ence of apple growers in Spokane last
November has been evolved a coopera
tive marketing organization which
will be launched immediately on a
continent-wide basis, having exclusive
agencies in 150 leading centers of
North America, extending from Mon
treal to Texas, and from Florida to
Eastern Montana.
Through these agencies most of the
great apple crop of the states of
Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Mon
tana will be marketed cooperatively
under one central selling agency.
The organization of Pacific North
west fruit growers is considered by
bankers and business men to be the
most important economic development
of the present decade, and they are
freely asserting that this cooperative
movement will mean the salvation of
the apple industry o f these states,
which last year produced 16,000 car
loads.
Carload shipments will commence
next week under direction of General
Manager J. H. Robbins at the Spokane
headquarters of the distributors. While
apples perhaps will constitute the bulk
of the corporation’s shipments, all de
ciduous fruits of the four states will
be distributed.
In addition to 150 exclusive agents,
the North Pacific Fruit Distributors
will have representatives covering the
Middle Western gateways at Omaha
and Minneapolis, as well as at Chicago
and New York headquarters, two in
the territory of Montana and the Da
kotas and three in the provinces of
Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
H. F. Davidson, a large grower of
Hood River, Or., president of the dis
tributors, will go to New York August
1, and H. E. Smith, sales manager
from Southern Idaho, to Chicago, to
perfect organizations at these head
quarters.
$5,000,000 Melon Is Divided.
New York—The directors of the
American Express company have de
cided to distribute among the stock
holders of the company 45,000 shares
of stock of Wells-Fargo & Co., with
a market value o f nearly $5,000,000,
which has been held by the company
for several years.
As there are 180,-
000 shares of American Express stock,
one share of Wells-Fargo will be al-
loted for each four shares of the
American company’s stock.
The American Express company ob
tained the stock several years ago
when it was bought as a result of an
agreement whereby it contracted with
the Union Pacific railroad for exten
sion o f its service over that line. The
purchase was made, the directors said,
with the intention ultimately o f dis
tributing the Wells-Fargo stock thus
obtained.
Will Allow Mail Deposits.
Washington, D. C. — Banking by
mail is the latest innovation entered
into by the government in connection
with the postal savings system. Here
after deposits may be made by mail
and withdrawals likewise effected
through the same agency.
When the postal savings system was
first put into operation, postmasters
were forbidden to permit deposits by
such persons as were not patrons of
the postoffice in which they sought to
bank. This was found to work a real
hardship on a certain class o f would-
be depositors, and Postmaster General
Burleson accordingly abrogated the
rule.

Friedmann Patient Dies.
Topsfield, Mass. — Alford Warriner
Cooley, ex-United States assistant at
torney general and an ex-judge o f the
New Mexico Supreme court, the most
prominent patient to receive Dr.
Friedmann’ s "cu re” for tuberculosis,
succumbed to the disease here.
His dramatic 3000-mile dash across
the continent from Silver City, N. M .,
to Providence, R. I., where Dr. Fried
mann was then holding his only New
England clinic, was sensational.
Widespread belief that Dr. Fried
mann had discovered a cure for con
sumption renewed Judge Cooley’s hope
and it was through the offices o f Colo
nel Roosevelt, it is said, that an ap
pointment was made jwith Dr. Fried
mann.

The wild rice which grows in lakes
in the northern part of the United
States and in the southern part of

the true rice familiar to everybody.
Wild rice is best known to many per
sons as a favorite food of wild ducks
and other water fowl, but it sells in
some cities at two or three times the
price o f ordinary rice. It is consid
ered the most nutritious grain grown
in North America.

Superstitions That Survive.
The death of the Roman Emperor
Maximus was presaged by the howling
of dogs. It was in the hope of finding
the stream of perpetual youth that led
Ponce de Leon, the Spanish discover
er, on his trips through Florida, while
De Soto was seeking for a city of gold.
In Brazil the people believe that Don
Sebastian, the royal hero who was
slain in Africa about 1580 in a battle,
will return to claim the crown.
The
people go out on windy nights to
watch the heavens anticipating his re
turn.
Dr. Pierce’s Pleasant Pellets first
put up 40 years ago. They regulate
and invigorate stomach, liver and bow
els. Sugar-coated tiny granules.
Largest Black Diamond.

diamond in the world was discovered
in Brazil in 18957 It weighed 3,078
karats, and was discovered in the
marsh “ do Lama,” near the town o f
Lencoes, in the state o f Bahia, by one
of those searchers called here “ garim-
perios.”

fellow was Sergio Borges de Carvalho,
and he sold his find to an agent named
Jose de Cerqueira for 190,000 francs
(about $47,500).
Stringing Pearl«.
Only the finest silk is used for
stringing the finest pearls.
Great
beads, round and shiny, unmistakably
artificial, and with no more real luster
than white marbles, with the excep
tion o f what are called Roman pearls,
manufactured many years ago, may be
allowed to hang together on catgut,
but orients must be threaded, pearl
kiBsing pearl, on silken strands,
worthy o f their shape and “ skin.”
Found the Point.
A teacher told one of her boys that
the next time he wrote a composition
there must be some point to it. The
subject o f his next disquisition was
“ Needles.”
