ARMIES MEET

Civil War Veterans by Thous

Hot Sun Causes Many to Fall-First
Death on Field Due to Heat
—Arrangements Perfect.
Gettysburg, Pa. — Gettysburg step
ped 50 years backward Sunday into
history and looked again on an army
o f Blue and an army o f Gray, meeting
at her doorstep. From early morning
until long after sundown the veterans
in blue and gray trooped into the little
town which has slept peacefully among
its hills since Lee and Meade turned
their legions southward long ago.
More than 30 special trains came
into the village during the day and
thousands of veterans who tramped up
from the Shenandoah on their former
visit rode in comfort from Harrisburg,
Baltimore and Washington. Instead
of the roar o f guns that greeted them
in the other days they entered into the
quiet Sunday calm o f a country town.
Only the flags flying from every win
dow, the city of tents in the distance,
and the crowds told that Gettysburg
had come out of the usual into the
extraordinary once more.
From the station of the two railroads
that enter the village is a long mile to
the camp of 5000 tents where the vet
erans are housed. Thousands shoul
dered suitcases and walked under a
scorching, cloudless sky. Several suc
cumbed before they found their tents.
There was no complaining, however.
Every possible arrangement for the
comfort of the united armies has been
made. The camp of brown army tents
is under the direction of officers of the
regular army The streets o f Gettys
burg are under the scrutiny of the
Pennsylvania constabulary, and for the
care of the sick the Red Cross has
made extensive preparations.
The camp itself lies on ground that
has been baked as hard as a brick and
dried into dust by winds that sweep
the hills, but its sanitation, its water
supply, and its plan for the feeding of
thousands o f men, have been made
with the utmost care.

Suffragists Make Savage Attack on
British Cabinet.
London — Miss Sylvia Pankhurst,
daughter of Mrs. Emmaline Pank
hurst, the suffragette leader, led an
attacking party to Downing street
Saturday afternoon for the purpose of
imprisoning the cabinet ministers.
The expedition was unsuccessful, but
the victory of the police was not won
without a series o f fierce scrimmages,
in which both policemen and women
were injured.
Miss Pankhurst appeared at a dem
onstration ir Trafalgar Square in fav
or of free speech. She denounced the
Right Honor, ble Reginald McKenna,
the home secretary “ for killing my
mother.” Then she invited the crowd
to go to Downing street and “ imprison
the ministers in their own houses.”
The police, however, had been ap
prised o f the intentions of the demon
strators and had thrown a strong cor
don around Downing street.
Dock
workers in the .attacking party tried
to break through and some of the wo
men went to their aid, but were se

In the fighting the women were
thrown to the ground and the dockers
clubbed. Many were arrested.

crowd.
