Blue Nose Is a popular name for a
native of Nova Scotia. Haliburton,
In "Sam Slick,” gives the following
account of Its origin: “ ‘Pray, sir,'
said one of my fellow passengers, ‘can
you tell me why the Nova Scotians
are called Blue Noses?’ ‘It Is the name
of a potato,’ said I, 'which they pro

boast to be the best In the world. The
Americans have, in consequence,
given them the nickname ‘Blue

Read Story of H e r Death.
When a blacksmith, named Lyon,
declared that the body of a drowned
woman, recently exhumed at Creil.
France, was that of his wife, Juliette,
who deserted him two years ago, a
death certificate was made out in her
name. Juliette, however, was very
much alive, and, after reading the
story in the Petit Parisien, she wrote
an indignant letter to the authorities,
demanding to be "officially resusci

Seattle, Wash. — Madame Butterfly

their place looms the new Japanese
woman o f the club type, emancipated
and progressive, who promises soon to
reduce the little brown man to the
conventional submissive state of the
American husband.
Kimonas have been cast aside for
scant tailored suits; huge ornamented
hairpins are replaced by Parisian
model hats, and the wee little feet are
expanding in the roomy recesses of
booties o f approved English cut.
But most significant o f all, there
has just been formed in Seattle a Jap

This stride in civilization was taken
at a meeting o f 35 Japanese women in
the Y . W. C. A. rooms, at which the
following officers were elected: Mrs.
S. Yosioka, president; Miss Kigo
Nte, vice president; Miss Kusanna,
secretary, and K. Sakamoto, treas

Among the members is the
daughter o f the Japanese consul, Atsu-
