Stencil Letters Used by Ancient*
Movable characters were known to
the ancients; they were used in teach

bad also stencil letters, which they
used to secure a regular style of pen

plates, thus open-cut, containing an en

excellent means,” salth Quintilian, “ to
learn them not to exceed the desired
proportions.” The Emperor Justinian
(A. D. 618) could neither read nor
write, an unexampled thing in one of
such high rank. When It was neces

a sheet of gold, through which were
cut the letters of his name. ‘‘Then,’’
said Procopius, “ placing this tablet

The hulks of the vessels

2C0.000 Miner* to Strike.
Berlin — Leaders o f the Socialist
Miners’ union issued a proclamation
declaring 200,00 miners would go on
strike in the Westphalian coal district
unless the mine owners reversed their
decision not to accord the 15 per cent
advance asked. The proclamation fol

replies to the demands were discussed.
There appears to be little prospect
that the mine owners will accede to the

government to bring about mediation
are declared by miners to be too late.
